Khandwa Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple – Guide
Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated on Shivpuri and Mandhata island near Narmada river in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh state. This temple is even more special because one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is established here. It is said that at this place the Narmada river itself flows in the shape of ‘Om’.
History of this Temple
According to historical evidence found in the year 1063, King Udayaditya had installed four stones, which had stotrams written in Sanskrit language. After this, in 1195, Raja Bharat Singh Chauhan got this place rebuilt. After this Mandhata was ruled by Sindhis, Malwa, Parmar. In the year 1824, this area was handed over to the British Government. According to the historical evidence found in relation to Khandwa Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple, it is considered to be about 5500 years old from today. We find description about Omkareshwara Temple in Puranas as well, in this way we can get an idea of its antiquity.
Khandwa Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple is situated at the confluence of Narmada and Kaveri rivers. Let us inform that two Jyotirlingas are established in Omkareshwar, one is Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga and one is Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. Omkareshwar is located between Mandhata mountain and Shivpuri while Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on the southern bank.
