Kalighat Kali Temple – Guide

The Kalighat Kali Temple which is also known as Kali Mata Temple in Kolkata is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kali. Kalighat Temple is a sacred ghat on the Hooghly River in the city of Calcutta. With time the river moved away from the temple. The temple now stands on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to Hooghly. The word Calcutta is said to have been derived from the word Kalighat. Kalighat is considered one of the 51 Shaktipeeths of India. Kalighat represents the site where the toes of Sati’s right foot fell.

History of this Temple

In 1809, the Kalighat Kali Temple was built by Sabarna Roy Chowdhury. The original temple was built by Raja Basanta Rai, who was Pratapaditya’s uncle and the king of Jessore Bangladesh. The Kalighat temple in its present form is about 200 years old, although it is referred to in the 15th century Mansar Bhasan and in the 17th century poet Kankan Chandi. The present structure was completed in 1809 under the guidance of Sabran Roy Chowdhury.

Best time to visit Kalighat Kali Temple

Durga pooja in the month of September or October, Kali Puja in Diwali, Pohela Boishakh, and Dondi Festival are the major festivals celebrated in this temple.

Kalighat Kali Temple Timings

Kalighat Kali Temple is opens from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the morning and from 5:00 PM  to 10:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 5:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 6:30 PM in the evening.
