By 2023, both the condition and direction of Indian cinema have changed. In this, both the unlimited content available on OTT platforms and the COVID-19 pandemic have played an important role. Those who have understood this game are progressing at quadruple speed day and night, otherwise, they are forced to face the same fate as Bollywood. But Siddharth Roy Kapur has a different idea.

Read in this article how Siddharth Roy Kapur has given an important message for Bollywood to understand the changing environment of cinema.

OTT has changed a lot

In a recent interview with Outlook magazine, Siddharth Roy Kapur, taking a different stance from other Bollywood producers, has accepted that Bollywood is not as successful as it should have been when the COVID-19 pandemic subsided.

According to Siddharth, “It is a golden age from a content perspective. Now, the story and setting are more important than star power alone. Earlier, due to the barriers, we could not perform to the best of our abilities, but now those barriers have been removed to a large extent. There are limitless opportunities available to any content creator now, and OTT platforms have helped level the competition field. Gone are the days when theaters were the only means of pure entertainment.”

Lack of grounded content

So the question arises: what should happen so that the audience automatically comes to the cinema hall? In response to this, the answer given by Siddharth Roy Kapur should be listened to by almost every member of Bollywood. According to him, “OTT platforms have brought about a sea change in the approach of our viewers. They get multiple options in one place.”

When he was asked why Hindi films were not working, his answer was clear, “I have full faith in my filmmakers and my writers. Sometimes such challenges come before us, from which we have to overcome. We want to try our hand everywhere, but somewhere it seems that we are not able to provide down to earth, authentic content to the audience.”

Kadak cinema is the only option

Siddharth Roy Kapur is one of the few creators who are trying their luck in both theaters and OTT platforms, and have been successful to some extent. His company has displayed series like “Rocket Boys” in front of the audience.

In such a situation, he understands very well what the audience wants and what not. In Siddharth’s own words, “If you want to attract audiences to theaters, you have to offer them something that is not easily available on OTT platforms. You will have to make films where there is a lot of masala, action, the experience of which makes you feel compelled to go to the cinema hall to watch that film. The fate of Hindi cinema in the last few years is a wakeup call for us. The message is clear: wake up and give good cinema.”

Bollywood will have to imbibe these words of Siddharth Roy Kapur soon. So far in the first quarter of 2023, there hasn’t been a film from the industry that has made the audience say, “This is a must-watch in the cinema hall.” Furthermore, the fate of films like Zwigato and Bheed has made it clear that producers are soon going to close their doors to agenda-based nonsense in the name of films. Siddharth Roy Kapur is hinting somewhere in the same direction.”
