Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple – Guide
The Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar is the largest and oldest of all the temples here. This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built by King Jajati Keshati in the 7th century. The special thing about the Lingaraj temple is that here only the followers of Hindu religion are allowed to enter the temple. The main temple is 55 meters tall and has about 50 other shrines.
Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple is considered to be the only temple in India where both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshiped together.
History of this Temple
The history of Lingaraj temple is very old. Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple is believed to be of 11th century. This temple was built by King Jajati Keshari when he shifted his military capital from Bhubaneswar to Jaipur. Although historians believe that the temple has existed since the 6th century in some other form, as it is mentioned in the Brahma Purana, a 7th-century manuscript, which focuses on the importance of Lord Shiva in Bhubaneswar.
Many festivals are celebrated every year in this temple which are the centre of attraction among the tourists. Chandan Yatra, Rath Yatra and Shivratri are among the most popular festivals of Lingaraj Temple, presenting a sight of pure devotion. Ashokashtami sees spectacular celebrations of the Rath Yatra of Lingaraja, when the deity seated on a chariot is taken to the Rameswara Deula temple. Devotees pull the colorful chariots of Lingaraja and his sister Rukmani to the temple, which is considered the greatest service to the Lord.

Bhubaneswar Lingaraj Temple opens from 2:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the morning and from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 3:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 5:00 PM in the evening.
