Lete Hanuman Mandir Prayagraj – Guide

About 500 meters north of Prayagraj Fort, a famous religious place – Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir is situated. Also called the Lete Hanuman Mandir, this temple is an underground pit that houses a colossal image of Lord Hanuman in a reclining position. This is the only Lord Hanuman temple in the world, whose idol is in a lying position. Another interesting thing to know about this popular Lete Hanuman Mandir in Prayagraj is that a part of the idol of Lord Hanuman is half-submerged in the water of the river Ganga.

History of this Temple

Legend has it that a wealthy merchant lived in the city of Kannauj. The merchant was living his life without any problems with immense wealth, however, he wanted a son. And for that, he went towards Vidhyanchal Hills to build a temple of Lord Hanuman. As per his wish, he built a temple in the hills and also made a huge stone idol of Lord Hanuman, which he decided to bathe in several holy places.

After purifying the idol from various holy places, he reached Sangam in Prayagraj. At night when he was sleeping he dreamed that if he left the idol at this place all his unfulfilled wishes would be fulfilled. As a result, he returned to Kannauj leaving the idol at Prayagraj. After some time he was blessed with a son and all his wishes were also fulfilled. With the passage of time the idol got stuck under the sand and remained submerged in the water.
