With the advent of OTT platforms, there has been a revolution in the quality of content and the coverage of varied genres. While Netflix and Amazon Prime get most of the traction for their content and controversies, Sony Liv has been quietly impressing audiences. The first season of Sony Liv’s Rocket Boys was widely appreciated for neatly capturing the story of India’s scientists in an engaging manner. This created a great deal of anticipation for its new season, which was recently released on March 16.
Plot line
The story of the second season picks up where the first left off. Season 2 highlights the events that happened in the timeline from 1964 to 1974. During this critical period, India conducted its first nuclear tests in Pokhran in order to become a nuclear state.
The plot delves to show that Homi Bhabha moves forward on the nuclear program. However, it is not only the CIA that stands in his way; he also has to face internal opposition to fulfill his ambition of making India a nuclear power.
Vikram Sarabhai is in a fix as he is battling the indifference of the Nehru administration. Furthermore, despite his personal difficulties, he wishes to maintain his space program. Further, the second season also shed light on how Raja Ramanna and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam fulfilled their respective dreams and how they made the first Pokhran test a success.

The season has also put the focus on the jitteriness in the CIA camp and how they want to sabotage India’s nuclear program. As always, mind you, the US was hand in glove with Pakistan in that time period.
Judging the series on historical accuracy, it has tried to touch on issues like how Morarji Desai gave a cold shoulder to INCOSPAR’s scientific endeavors. Homi Bhabha (Jim Sarbh) makes satirical commentary on America, and it gives the indication that there is not even a slight difference between America of the 1960s and today.
Rather than getting lost in the personal life of Sarabhai and his family, the story tries to capture the point of view of Dr Kalam. It has to be noted that Arjun Radhakrishnan has done a great job in essaying the role of India’s missile man, Dr. Kalam.
Unlike many series where subsequent seasons failed to meet expectations, Rocket Boys 2 has done a great job in this aspect. Further, the series has successfully achieved its intended purpose, that is, to intrigue viewers about the significant strides India has taken so far. For a new viewer, the series provides a solid foundation upon which to build.
