Choices are subjective, and depending on the likes and dislikes of an individual, the contemporary musical releases may be melancholy for some. However, if you have ever heard the spellbinding songs of Lata Mangeskar, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi, or Jasjit Singh, among others, you may have felt disenchanted and even frustrated with the Bollywood songs of this era.
For a vast majority, these new releases are awful fusions or remakes and have no soul. They are completely devoid of lyrics and feelings, basically just “word salad’. In the ‘Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO) and YOLO types of feelings, people have started to fake liking such song-slaughter. To all those getting infuriated and determined to hurl abuse in the comments and throw ‘develop taste’ at us, they should immediately change their playlist altogether.

Commercialization failed the Bollywood music industry
It is not that we are punching down Bollywood. In fact, unlike its agenda within films, the same industry has given us timeless musical gems. We suggest you play the following songs on loop and enjoy them to understand that it’s not about Bollywood or regional cinema or other such controversial debates. A few suggested songs are as follows – “मेरी उमर के नौजवानों..”, “तुम आए तो आया मुझे याद, गली में आज चाँद निकला..” or “सच कह रहा है दीवाना”.
The list is endless and is just given to substantiate the larger issue and highlight the dip in creativity and artistic skills in the Bollywood music industry. Further, there was a time when films were known primarily on the basis of their impactful and soothing music. Unsurprisingly, at times, songs saved the day for producers even when the film tanked miserably at the box office.
Additionally, there was a time when artists like Sonu Nigam, Krishnakumar Kunnath [aka KK], Alisha Chinoy, Mohit Chauhan, and Lucky Ali dominated the scene. They created a wonderful amalgamation of Indipop and film music. “Ek Pal Ka Jeena” and “Na Tum Jaano Na Hum” are its prominent examples.

But in a blind rush to profit from the bollywood music producers, particularly the most subscribed YouTube channel, T-Series started compromising with the quality of the music. Further, rewarding mediocrity has also played a key role in this downfall. For example, countless awards were showered on mediocre songs from ‘Gully Boys” at a time when there were far better contenders like songs from ‘Kabir Singh’ or the nation’s favorite, ‘Kesari’. Enough damage has been done; it is time that cheapsters making fortunes on easy and frequent releases are shown their place and great songs, even in their rarity, should be lauded and made chartbusters.
