Doordarshan news: There were mainly two drawbacks of print media that helped electronic media make its own space. One was the limitation of literacy, and the other was delayed publication. Incidents were reported a day after in newspapers. Although electronic media faced hurdles with hardware and connectivity reach, it was, by and large, successful in gaining prominence.
With the era of electronic media, the journey of Doordarshan also began. With the passing of time, more players came into the competition, and Doordarshan seems to be lagging behind. But amidst chaotic and sinister reporting, it seems like people are missing the old Doordarshan days.
A new era of Doordarshan
It is interesting to note that when it first began, Doordarshan was known as ‘Television India’. Doordarshan was renamed in 1975 and a dedicated news channel called ‘DD News’ was launched on November 3, 2003. However, in current times, there are numerous news agencies that have covered most of the viewership, and in order to gain a higher Television Rating Point (TRP), they have started a dogfight among themselves.
Unfortunately, the so-called national media has lost the essence of nationalism, with their news mainly centred around political issues and those that have the potential to boost TRP. Regional or social issues are left behind until they receive national attention. For example, the devastation caused by the Assam flood remained largely absent from mainstream media reporting. Most commercial media houses show debates during prime time that barely conclude with an optimistic notion.
On the contrary, DD News has a vibrant portfolio of shows that connect directly to people, such as Mann Ki Baat, Positive India, Khabar Duniya Ki, Seedha Samvad, World Konnect, Vaartavali, TotalHealth, and The Social Connection, among others. There is also a program named Hariyali for peasants. Apart from that, to acknowledge the vast needs of different regions, Doordarshan has launched many news channels in regional languages.

Doordarshan: Essence of news remains alive
Nowadays, news channels are trying to make their coverage more attractive by adding glamour to it. For example, during budget sessions, they lift their temporary studios hundreds of meters in the air to get more viewers. However, many media houses are forgetting the most important thing about news – its essence.
In other words, amidst this race for TRP, they are focusing more on making news exciting rather than delivering it accurately and with the right context. Therefore, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Doordarshan and DD News are some of the most reliable sources for news and information in India.
