Priests protest Delhi: When you climb up the steps of political ladder through issues like development and have presented yourself as the crusader against corruption, you are expected to stick to the basic agenda with which it began. But, it’s not so easy looking at the dynamics of Indian politics. Probably, for gaining electoral benefits, the one who had come to change politics have adopted the Congress’ way of politics, ‘Politics of Minority Appeasement’. For the same reason, Santani pujaris are forced to protest on streets for fulfilment of basic needs.
Priests protest Delhi: Sanatani Pujaris rock Delhi streets
Last week, thousands of Hindu priests rocked the streets of Delhi in order to register their basic demands. The Hindu priests led a demonstration near the chief minister’s residence demanding months salary on the line of monthly honorarium provided to Imams and Maulvis by the Kejriwal government.
The protesting pujaris said that the protest would continue until the Delhi government gives salaries to priests. They said, “Till the time the government does not give salaries to the priests and work for the protection of Sanatan Dharma, the protest will continue in the same way…We will show them the strength of Sanatan Dharma in 2024.” The protesting members also included people from the temple cell of the Delhi unit of Bhartiya Janata Party. The pujaris chanted Hanuman Chalisa and sang bhajans during the Priests protest Delhi and showed their rage against Delhi government’s decision to provide salaries to Imams and Maulvis, but not to Hindu, Sikh and Christian religious places.

The un-Hindu face of secular CM Kejriwal
Priests protest is not the first time that pandits have held a protest against the Delhi government. In 2021 BJP leaders and workers organised a protest at CM’s residence demanding payment of salaries to priests in various temples in Delhi.
The demand becomes natural as it is the Delhi government that has been paying salaries to Imams and Maulvis. As per CM Kejriwal’s 2019 announcement, the Delhi government has been paying the hiked amount for Imams and helpers of Masjids outside the jurisdiction of the Delhi Waqf Board. This was the first time that any government was funding the salary expenses of the mosques and salaries through taxpayers money.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has portrayed himself as “Hanuman Bhakt Kejriwal”. He had recited the Hanuman Chalisa too at a media conclave and had then tweeted the video, stating that listening to the Chalisa is good and soothing. While at the back, he has been comfortably ignoring the plight of priest community and indulging in blatant minority appeasement.
