India has made significant strides in the field of technology and innovation in recent years, and the launch of the indigenously developed Automatic Train Supervision (iATS) system is a testament to the country’s growing expertise. The ATS system is an advanced technology that enables real-time monitoring and control of train operations, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the railway network.
The launch of the ATS system is a significant milestone for the Indian Railways, which is one of the largest railway networks in the world. The system has been jointly developed by the DMRC and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced the i-ATS (Indigenous-Automatic Train Supervision) system on its first route, the Red line (from Rithala to Shaheed Sthal). For use on existing corridors as well as planned independent lines of the Phase 4 Project, the Delhi Metro will also install the i-ATS system. i-ATS will be used to introduce the Preventative Maintenance modules in the Phase 4 corridors as well.
A full-fledged i-ATS Lab has been established in DMRC’s IT Park to further the project, and a committed team from both organisations is working there to get the technology ready for use. This project is in keeping with the “Made in India” and “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” efforts for the Metro Rail Transportation Systems, both of which are directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
With this development, the country has moved a step forward for an indigenously built CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) based signalling system for the Metro railway. The ATS (Automatic Train Supervision), is a computer-based system which manages train operations. It is also an important sub-system of the CBTC Signalling system.

ATS system
The Automatic Train Supervision system uses advanced technologies such as satellite-based positioning, train detection sensors, and communication systems to provide real-time information about the position and speed of trains, as well as the location and status of signalling equipment.
The launch of the ATS system is a significant step towards modernising the Indian Railways and improving its efficiency and safety standards. It is expected to reduce the frequency of train accidents and improve the punctuality of trains, thereby making rail travel more convenient and reliable for passengers. Additionally, the system will enable the Indian Railways to optimise its operations, reduce its energy consumption and costs, and improve its environmental sustainability.
This development of the ATS system is also a significant step towards the Indian Government’s vision of making the country a hub for high-tech manufacturing and innovation. The government has been pushing for the development and adoption of advanced technologies in various sectors, including the railway industry, as part of its efforts to build a modern and sustainable economy.
