Pura Mahadev Mandir UP – Guide
A famous temple of Lord Shiva which is situated in western Uttar Pradesh and known as Pura Mahadev Mandir of UP. According to religious beliefs, this temple is considered an ancient Siddha Peeth. Even though this temple may not have gained fame in other regions, but people in western Uttar Pradesh have more faith in this temple. This temple is situated near Baghpat on the banks of the Hindon River, about 40 km from Meerut City.
History of this Mandir
According to ancient history, Renuka, the wife of Maharishi Jamdagni used to abishek the Shivling by taking water from this river daily in a new earthen pot for the consecration of Pura Mahadev Mandir UP. The Shivling here is thousands of years old. It is believed that this Shivling was established by Lord Parshuram. Parshuram did penance at this place to get rid of the sins committed during his lifetime.
No one has any knowledge of the depth of this Shivling till today. It is said that in the 17th century, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb unsuccessfully tried to demolish this temple. An attempt was also made to take out this Shivling by an elephant by tying ropes, but after that this Shivling could not be taken out from the root. Once upon a time, Ravana had also worshiped Lord Shiva in the Pura Mahadev temple.
