From Flop to Fame: Clerk film, the Cult Classic of Hindi Cinema

Clerk film

Clerk film: Cringe content can be a source of amusement and guilty pleasure for many. Though it might not be the moral kind of entertainment, sometimes giggling at someone else’s goof up can lighten you up. There is a peculiar and uncanny amusement in watching others stumble or by watching cringey reality TV moments. Though it might not fall in this category but to have fun most of us have behaved in a cringe manner to amuse kids – Peek-a-boo sort of things; or even sometime in a friendly environment or friendly banter.

There is a hyper cringe Bollywood film, ‘Gunda’. Its countless character scenes like Bhulla and his Khulla rhyme, Ibu Hatela, Lamboo Atta or Pote, keep doing rounds on the internet. If you enjoy watching such content on an intermittent basis and want to break the monotonicity of standard quality content to cheer you up, then rush to watch the cult classic in the cringe category, ‘CLERK’ film.

Powerful ensemble in a cringe script: Complete anti-brain Entertainer

In 1989, Bollywood released a one-man project involving a stellar ensemble cast that demanded audiences to keep their brains aside. This movie was, Clerk film. It was directed, produced, written, edited by Manoj Kumar. It was quite possible that it was only seen by Manoj Kumar himself, as initially it performed miserably.

The ensemble cast included Rekha, Anita Raj, Shashi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Prem Chopra and Sonu Walia. Two Pakistani actors Mohammed Ali and Zeba also appeared for their first and only time in a Hindi film. Coincidentally, Clerk film was the last movie which he directed and acted as a main lead in the film.

Synopsis

Clerk film revolves around a nagging but honest Clerk, Bharat played by Manoj Kumar himself. Funny thing is that he keeps repeating the same line to underline his honesty and economic condition. In fact, it has a cringe song as well – Main ek Clerk hoon with opening lines being, Suraj ugte mene na dekha, what a pity, a usual issue regularly raked by 9-5 goers.

The brother duo – Bharat and Ram have many cringe moments where Ram keep retelling his War exploits and how he lost his leg. Both of them prioritize intoxication over paying feeeees ( a reference from the movie, watch it to enjoy it) to a doctor to cure their heart-attack stricken father.

What happens later deserves an Oscar for a himalayan level of cringey moments.

The Clerk film story further delves on the circumstances which force him to adopt corrupt means. Will he be able to redeem himself in the end and how successful the cast were in amusing you, do tell us in the comment section?
