New Vikrant-Size Carrier: With the development of INS Vikrant, India has become the sixth country to develop an indigenous aircraft carrier. This will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the strength of the Indian Navy. With its large coastline and diverse and extensive stake in the Indian Ocean, the aircraft carrier is a necessity. As these carriers take a lot of time to manufacture, India is emphasizing future needs.

According to recent reports, the Indian Navy is planning to acquire another new aircraft carrier of INS Vikrant size, with some modifications. It is worth noting that INS Vikramaditya will soon join the Indian Navy after a major refit. This is a calculated move, as the time for manufacturing will be the same as the service of INS Vikramaditya. So, basically, it will be a replacement for INS Vikramaditya.

Admiral R Hari Kumar highlighted the reason for using the INS Vikrant module, saying, “If we have to design a new carrier, it will take time, and we need to bring in new technologies because the present arresting gear and catapult system are undergoing changes. It will be an entirely new design, and the ship-building facilities also have to be upgraded. So, we thought if we went for the repeat order of [INS] Vikrant, the work would start very soon.”

Initially, the plan was for IAC-2 to be larger than IAC-1, with a planned size of approximately 65,000 tonnes, compared to INS Vikrant’s 44,000-tonne size. The Indian Navy aims to have three aircraft carriers due to the extended maintenance period required for such large vessels, which may cause delays.

Therefore, the new aircraft will be ordered with increased capabilities. Meanwhile, a study will be conducted to determine the need for a larger carrier in the future.

With this move, India is flexing its naval muscles to grow Aatma nirbhanr in the sector and is working on blueprints. With the blueprint of the New Vikrant-Size Carrier, India’s strategy and plan seem to be taking a stern stance on the global level.
