Banke Bihari Mandir – Guide
Banke Bihari Mandir is a Hindu temple of the Radha Vallabha sect located at Vrindavan in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh and is one of the most famous temples of Vrindavan. Banke Bihari Mandir is dedicated to Lord Radha and Krishna. Devotees fondly know Banke Bihari ji as Vrajvasi and Bihari ji. Thousands of devotees and traders from all over the country come here daily to visit them.
History of this Temple
Banke Bihari Mandir was established by Swami Haridas ji, a devotee of Lord Krishna and Radharani. Swami Haridas ji was considered to be the friend of Shri Radhe-Krishna’s previous birth in the future cycle, Lalita. Seeing his devotion, Shri Krishna himself appeared before him in Nidhivan along with Shrimati Radharani. The beauty and attractiveness of the divine couple of the Lord was so great, that mortal beings could not bear their splendor.
Seeing their effulgence, Swami ji requested Shri Radhe-Krishna to unite like cloud and lightning. On the request of his dearest devotee Shri Radhe-Krishna merged into a single beautiful alluring black idol known as Shri Banke Bihari ji. This form of God is worshiped in the temple even today. Swami Haridas himself entrusted the responsibility of serving and worshiping Shri Banke Bihari ji to his disciple Goswami Jagannath.
