Bada Ganpati Mandir Indore – Guide

The Bada Ganpati Mandir located in Indore is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The name of the Mandir is Bada Ganapati because the temple houses a huge idol of Lord Ganesha about 25 feet high, which is the largest idol of Lord Ganesha in the world.

Bada Ganpati Mandir was built by Pandit Narayan Dadhich in 1875. The Ganesha idol is made of limestone, jaggery, brick, clay and water. It is believed that the clay used for the construction of this idol was procured from the seven holy cities of Ayodhya, Mathura, Kanchi, Maya, Avantika, Varanasi and Dwarka.

History of this Temple

There is some story behind the construction of Bada Ganpati Mandir, according to one legend, in 1875 Mr. Dadhich, a resident of the nearby city of Ujjain, had a vision of Lord Ganesha in his dream. He decided to build a huge idol of Lord Ganesha to seek his blessings. According to another legend, the temple was built about 100 years ago in 1775 by the great queen Ahilyabai Holkar.
