There are many instances when the politicians have buried ethics into depths unknown. In order to win over their opponent and in a dogfight of power, they often get blinded. They get indulged in disgusting politics, choking the sentiments of the people who elect them to serve the nation. This can be witnessed from the current political developments taking around the mayor position of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Few days ago, Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, uttered a disrespectful statement regarding Delhi, calling it the most undisciplined place. The statement is an obvious disrespect to the people of Delhi. A business tycoon giving such a disgraceful remark for the national capital is disappointing. But it is not the only worst thing that Delhi is suffering. The tug-of-war among political parties for the MCD chair is another example of how political aspirations are being played with in Delhi.
Chaos in MCD
MCD House witnessed a highly tumultuous scene on Thursday morning, with 14 consecutive adjournments and loud shouting from the AAP and BJP parties. The conflict arose over the election of six Standing Committee members. Mayor Shelly Oberoi was compelled to adjourn the House until 10 am on Friday due to the chaos.
Interestingly, chaos erupted in the latter half of the proceedings after a relatively smooth first half. The MCD House saw high drama with numerous adjournments from Wednesday evening through the night until early Thursday morning, with both parties engaging in high-decibel sloganeering.
The chaos was sparked by Mayor Shelly’s announcement that mobile phones would be allowed in the polling booth, which was opposed by BJP members who viewed it as a violation of the secret ballot process. The uproar ultimately led to full-fledged fistfights between AAP and BJP councillors.
Speaking at a press conference, the newly elected Mayor, Shelly Oberoi said, “It’s shameful what the BJP councillors did. The ballot box was thrown, ballot papers were torn and I was attacked.” She further added that “the BJP Councillors gheraoed the Well of the House and the proceedings had to be adjourned 13 times.”
Political parties failed people
The MCD elections became a matter of pride for the political parties because BJP lost the MCD elections for the first time since 2007. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party has won the elections for the first time.
The parties have their own claims on the issue but ultimately, it is the people of Delhi that are suffering. The worst part of the whole ruckus is that, the elected representatives of Delhi peoples are proving Narayana Murthy right.
