It is colloquially stated that Cinema is the mirror to society. Earlier an established fact, it has now become only a partial truth. Barring a few exceptional cases of individual brilliance on scientific or logical temperament, TV and cinema have been yielding terrible trends that have caused undesirable rumbling in the society.
These miserable trends include negative impact on family structure, wokeism trampling meritocracy and style triumphing over substance among other things. Here, we will highlight an obnoxious and peculiar impact that Bollywood has been making on the society and that is, shaping fashion trends since decades.
Rishi Kapoor’s love for Sweater
Back in the 70’s, when senior actors started to fade away on silver screens due to factors like of age and continuous failure, Rishi Kapoor had a grand entry in B-town. His chocolaty and innocent look fetched him several romantic roles. Undoubtedly, he went on to act in many plots as lead romantic protagonist. His roles in some of his movie gathered such a big cult that in no time he reached the top most pedestal of stardom. He was one among the superstars of B-town who became guarantee for success at box-office. The thing is, time does not always remain the same.
Back in the 80s, when age and weight started becoming hurdle for his romantic presence, Rishi Kapoor started appearing on screen wearing sweaters and dancing with his lady-lead. With it, he won hearts as a lover boy again but turned a boring sweeter look to be a hot fashion trend during the time. His dressing sense became so predictable that in most of the scenes he acted in after the 80’s, he was found wearing the same boring look.
Shah Rukh Khan – ‘Cool’ locket in Kuch kuch hota hai
If you are a 90s kid, you will have at least heard of Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. Shah Rukh Khan’s chemistry with gracious beauties appealed to the masses. The songs of the movie were a humongous success and are still imprinted in the memories of many Indians and people overseas.
There is no doubts about the fact that, Shah Rukh Khan’s fans completely fell for his looks from film and most of all him wearing the COOL necklace became talk of the town. Youth started going gaga over the locket and market saw an upsurge in demands. But was it really worth the hype that it developed into a fashion trend for the youth.
Sanjay Dutt’s leather jacket
Every dress has a decorum and dressing sense is a powerful way to present one’s personality. But Bollywood messed with it a number of times and went on to create a bizarre dress code with no meaning to them. Wearing nothing but a blazer on top of an inner vest while roaming around and fighting goons like a bodybuilder on the loose, Sanjay Dutt made this leather jacket look more ridiculous than most of the horrible Bollywood script altogether.
Jitendra’s white trousers
One of the most celebrated actors back then, Jitendra was among the most popular heartthrobs of his time. The actor was known for his white shirt/t-shirt, white trousers and white shoes on screen and sometimes off screen too. His obsession with those white trousers became so insane that the actor could be seen climbing trees, having lunch dancing, driving, romancing, playing sports, doing macho action that never suited his trait in white trousers.
Every colour has its essence and it puts forth some emotion when worn. But Jitendra giving no heeds any such sensible things. He repeatedly wore his white trousers in almost every movie he appeared in.
Salman Khan ripped jeans
When one trend fades, another emerges to take its place as the market’s dominant force. Distressed jeans are one of the countless denim styles that are currently going strong. And who better to look to for inspiration than celebrities like Salman Khan.
Bored of trying and wearing every possible dress code to pull masses to the silver screen, Salman khan, back in 2009, tried another crazy dress code for himself. He started wearing ripped jeans on screen and off screen as well. With confused opinion, the public started to follow the trend to the extent that out of 10 college going students, you can find ripped jeans in the collection of at least 6 of them.
These insane mass distortions of dress code among the masses are the repercussions of blindly following the protagonist of silver screen as our role model for dress code and every accept of life.
This insane craze of aping the getup of the cinematic heroes has caused irreparable damage and terribly ruined the fashion trend. The people need to realise that foolishness or buffoonery can only be appreciated in reel life and such insane aping will take them nowhere except nihilism. But if they are happy with that place, so be it.
