Nishkalank Mahadev Temple – Overview

Nishkalank Mahadev Temple is situated at a distance of about 23 km to the east of Bhavnagar. It is said that the Pandavas established Nishkalank or Nakalanka Mahadev on a new moon night in the Indian calendar month of Bhadrava. An idol of Lord Shankar was installed in an island above the sea about 3 km to the east of Koliyak. Nishkalank Mahadev Temple temple is 2 km inside the sea. One must travel by boat to reach this temple.

History of this Temple

According to historians, Nishkalank Mahadev Temple was built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata war. There will be a festival in this temple on Mahashivratri. The temple was built with special care to withstand very high tides.

Nishkalank Mahadev Temple is built in the middle of the sea where the tide is very active. The water usually recedes only for a few hours, and then the worshipers offer prayers to their favorited deity. The temple again submerges in water at 7 in the evening. The flag that is hoisted on the temple is changed only once a year on the occasion of the fair. The very important flag for Nishkalank Mahadev Temple has never been torn or washed away by tide, rain or winds till date.

The entire place is covered with tall grasslands which serve as the perfect environment for blackbucks to thrive. During the past it was a popular black buck and cheetah hunting ground for the Maharajas, but hunting was later banned due to the dwindling population of these majestic species.

Takhteshwar Temple

Takhteshwar Temple built by 1893 AD is famous for being one of the oldest temples in Gujarat and is mostly visited by a huge crowd of visitors from all over the world. The best thing about the location of this temple is that it is situated on top of a beautiful hillock, from where one can get spectacular views of the surroundings. The entire humble temple structure is supported by 18 beautiful and ornately carved pillars as well as an amazing main hall with unique 3 eyed idol of Lord Shiva.
