Meghalaya Assembly Election 2023: There is a dialogue for the North-East region in the film Anek, which said that commoners of the nation look at the states not with separate identity but as an entire region. The dialogue said that any common Indian would not be able to point and name states in the North-East. This was the reality BJP is fighting against.
Till Congress’ rule, the North-Eastern region received a step-motherly treatment. There was no development. No need of infrastructure was felt by the consecutive UPA governments and the region was way back in time, marred with conflicts and insurgency. The Bhartiya Janata Party has left no stone unturned in changing that and for that the party looks at reaping electoral gains in the upcoming elections.
BJP saffronising North-East one state at a time
It is a fact that the Bhartiya Janata Party has been saffronising North East one state at a time in pursuit of Congress-Mukt Bharat. The region also has a tradition with the one running the centre, which was witnessed at the time of different governments, like Rajiv Gandhi or Atal Vihari Vajpayee. However, the BJP could not become a player in the region up until 2014.
The party which once struggled for its presence to be felt had now comfortably wrested power in Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. In Meghalaya and Nagaland too, the BJP was part of the government along with National People’s Party (NPP) and National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).

BJP in Meghalaya
BJP did not gain initially in the states. But the party never gave up and remained a party in all the eight north-eastern states. To ensure a Congress-Mukt Northeast and bring development to the region, the BJP has got into alliance with parties regardless of ideological differences. The case of Meghalaya stands in deposition.
In 2013, Congress gained a majority with 29 seats and the BJP could not score in single digits. With constant effort, in 2018, the BJP gained 2 seats and Congress won 21. In lack of majority, the BJP allied with the NPP that had 19 seats in the kitty, and thus BJP became a part of the government.
Being in the government guaranteed BJP a way to reach out to people and grant them the benefits of central schemes. The same would pay the party in the upcoming elections.

BJP plans to be the kingmaker
The plan to win the Meghalaya Assembly Election 2023 at once seems to be a distant dream for the BJP and it would take some more years. However, the BJP with its constant efforts seems to be the kingmaker this time once again as it was in 2018, but with a bigger mandate.
What seems to be going in favour of the BJP in a non-Hindu state is the pro-development agenda. The back-to-back inauguration of infrastructural project and resolution of conflict with other states would serve BJP a bigger mandate. Over the years, the BJP has developed its own organisation that is set to benefit the party in these Meghalaya Assembly Election 2023. Although, the party wishes to contest on all 60 seats, the role saffron party is eyeing is of the kingmaker.
