‘Kejriwal gave 19 crores to Congress leader’, AAP government once again indulges in exploiting taxpayers’ money

Kejriwal government new scam: Arvind Kejriwal, the self-proclaimed ‘champion of Anti-corruption movement’ is caught in no-man’s land with his government getting involved in new controversies with each passing day. To add to the long list of wrongdoings of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the recent revelation of the Raj Bhawan highlights that the ‘not-so-Aam’ Chief Minister of Delhi has been outrageously spending tax-payers money to defend his corrupt ministers and leaders.

Kejriwal’s moral high ground costed Delhites, 28 crores

The sitting Chief Minister of Delhi has stooped so low that he has forgotten all his previous preaching of the “Lokpal Andolan days.” The infamous Delhi government under Kejriwal, which was earlier accused of spending crores on advertisements, RTI-campaigns, and other image-bolstering and propaganda campaigns, has now resorted to a new wastrel of paying crores to advocates to defend corrupt party members.

According to recent reports, the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government has hoodwinked the state exchequer out of Rs 25.25 crores. The Kejriwal government has made these payments to lawyers appearing for the alleged Delhi Liquor Policy Scam case (Delhi Excise Policy Scam) in the court litigations. Further, The New Indian Express has reported that, in the previous 18 months, the Kejriwal-led AAP government has spent a total of Rs 28.10 crore.

Further, the Raj Bhawan data depicts that the Kejriwal government has been accused of paying Rs 18.97 crore to Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi for defending the individual members of the party implicated in corruption charges in the preceding year. In addition, the crusader of justice, Kejriwal, had no shame in paying Rs 5.30 crore to advocate Rahul Mehra to defend jailed Delhi government minister Satyendar Jain.

Moreover, these reports claimed that Singhvi was paid Rs 14.85 crore in the year 2021–22 and Rs 4.1 crore subsequently. Similarly, Rahul Mehra was given only Rs 2.4 lakh in 2020–21 and Rs 3.9 crore in 2021–22 as fees, in addition to the Rs 1.3 crore paid in the current financial year.

Additionally, the insiders at the Raj Bhawan told TNIE that the Kejriwal government had spent Rs 6.70 crores in total since the liquor scandal came to light. The General Administration Department (GAD) and the health department received the lion’s share of this funding but, the AAP leaders have turned a blind eye to the criticisms levied against them on account of misappropriation of funds.

CM Kejriwal using state treasury for defending corruption cases

The series of events depict that CM Arvind Kejriwal has been endorsing the same pattern of paying advocates for tackling individual charges framed against him and his party members. The irony is that Kejriwal, who is frequently seen in media platforms advocating transparency in public spending, crackdown on corruption and other ethical issues, has himself been resorting to unethical spending of the taxpayers money for settling personal and political brownie points.

Is it justified for Kejriwal to mock the taxpayers?

Earlier in 2017, Arvind Kejriwal was also accused by BJP for “dacoity and loot” as the Chief Minister of Delhi had made advancements of Rs 3.42 crore to legendary lawyer Ram Jethmalani from government funds for his personal defamation lawsuit.

The trajectory adopted by the Kejriwal government over the years depicts that AAP’s tallest leader has centered his focus around aggressive targeting of the opposition and has been brainwashing people through rigorous advertisements, but on the contrary, he has been misappropriating taxpayers money for his personal and political interests.

On the contrary, the Aam Aadmi Party has devised an evil strategy of crying foul play and political vendetta in the media to justify the party’s eroding standards of ethics. Further, when it receives backlash from the political opposition, Kejriwal comes out in the open with an innocent face and narrates fabricated stories. However, it will be interesting to see what new stories CM Kejriwal will concoct to justify his wasteful approach of making large payments to Congress leaders in exchange for batting for his party in the courts.
