One nation one charger policy: E-waste or Electronic Waste is a form of waste generated by discarded electrical or electronic devices like mobile phones, laptops and electrical parts like microchips, cables etc. This type of waste is becoming a major environmental concern due to the presence of toxic substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium that can contaminate soil and water sources if not disposed of properly.
India is one of the major contributors to the global e-waste crisis. In 2020-2021, India generated approximately 3.4 lakh tonnes of e-waste. According to CPCB, the generation of plastic waste per year is increasing by 3% but the rate of generation of e-waste is even higher. To address this issue, the government of India has taken several steps to reduce and manage e-waste.
One of the key initiatives taken by the government is the establishment of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. The EPR framework is a system in which the producers of electronic goods are made responsible for their products throughout their life cycle. This includes taking back the products once they have been used and disposing of them in an environmentally responsible manner.
The government has also launched the National E-waste Management Rules 2016, which state that producers, consumers and bulk consumers of electronic goods have a legal responsibility to dispose of their e-waste responsibly. The rules mandate the establishment of a nationwide collection and channelize system for e-waste and ensure that the e-waste is collected and disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.
One nation one charger policy: Solid steps towards great goal
The Indian Government has authorised the utilisation of a unified USB Type-C charger for mobiles, laptops and other electronic devices. By March 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIF) will be facilitating the introduction of this universal charger, with the aim of lessening e-waste and offering users the convenience of not needing to buy multiple chargers for their various gadgets.
Currently, many smartphones are being released with USB Type-C ports due to its speed and convenience. It allows for quicker charging times. USB Type-C not only supports fast charging, but you also get the facility of fast data transfer.
“There is a global supply chain at play when it comes to chargers, therefore we have to align ourselves with the global timeline,” said Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary, ministry of consumer affairs.
“In India the directive will kick in three months after the European Union,” he added. The European Union has recently announced that, starting from December 28, 2024, all smartphones including iPhones sold in its member states must come with a common USB Type C charger.
Additionally, laptop makers have been given until 2026 to comply with this new directive. This is in an effort to reduce the amount of electronic waste produced; it is estimated that 11,000 tons of waste could be saved if the 450 million citizens of the EU are provided with the same type of charger.
Now, the Government of India is joining the effort to reduce e-waste by making USB Type-C the mandatory standard. This will not only cut down on the need to purchase chargers separately, but also save money for individuals.
Apple will be most affected
One nation one charger policy could have a major impact on the Apple corporation, since they have been using the Lightning port for a while. Even when this port is different from all and also slow. As a result of the new rule, Apple will have to switch to using the USB Type-C port in all their phones released in India.
However, following the rules of the European Union, Apple has announced to provide Type-C port in the smartphones launched there. But now it remains to be seen whether the company launches it in India with Type C port or not. Apple is producing iPhones in India and has recently reported exporting $2.5 billion worth of iPhones from the country, indicating that the company has the potential for great success in the country. It is clear from the figures that it would not be challenging for them to replace the charging port with Type-C like other manufacturers in the market.
