Assam church survey order: The current state of opposition parties in India is comprised of a deadly brew of ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ and ‘घर का भेदी लंका ढाए’. The opposition parties are seemingly involved in an unsaid competition amongst themselves by stooping to greater levels of appeasement for electoral gains.
The most prominent approach observed over the years had been to fear monger the minorities against the ruling BJP and to reap the minority vote banks. The latest act of intolerance to depict India in bad light under the present regime and receive foreign favours can be witnessed from the vicious letter written by a Trinamool Congress leader addressed to the Embassy of the Holy See at Vatican.
Assam Police controversial move to survey the churches
A new controversy sparked after a confidential inter-departmental directive of the Assam police has come to the public gaze. The purported order is believed to facilitate carrying out a survey on churches across the districts in Assam by the police administration. The said move of the police administration is believed to be planned out with the view to curtail forced conversion within the state.

However, the Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also looks after the home affairs of the state, has distanced himself from the policy. CM Sarma has denied his involvement in the alleged episode and ordered a probe into the matter.
Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, the DGP of Assam Police has been asked by the CM to investigate the matter. However, despite the rebuttal of the CM, the leaders of the opposition parties are eager to make the most out of the opportunity by defaming the Assam government.
Hate-mongering over the Assam Police church survey order
Adding fuel to the controversy, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has written to the Embassy of the Holy See of the Vatican in India. It has urged for global intervention against the Assam “church survey order”.
The letter penned by the Trinamool Congress spokesperson Saket Gokhale was addressed to Reverend Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, Embassy of the Holy See of Vatican. The alleged letter is filled with personal prejudice, as the leader intentionally exaggerated the facts.
He not only misrepresented the ‘Assam church survey order’ of the police by equating it with “state-sponsored persecution of Christians”, but also dragged the Assam government and the reputation of the nation for his two-minutes of fame.
However, from the timing of the letter, it can be said that the letter has been drafted after a well-thought-out strategy to defame the nation on international platforms. The letter highlights that the intentions of Saket Gokhale are filled with malice. The TMC leader, who has recently been apprehended by the Gujarat Police, seems to settle scores with the Modi government through his letter.
The foremost reason behind ‘washing the dirty linen in public’ owes it to the growing might of the Modi government on international fronts. Through the letter, the Trinamool Congress is trying to target the Modi-administration on foreign turf and reap electoral gains at home.
Mamata trying to champion the Minorities
The opposition parties are running a rat race of portraying themselves as the ‘biggest critic’ and ‘contender of PM Modi’ for the upcoming 2024 elections. However, the regional parties and their leaders are leaving no stone unturned to soil the image of PM Modi on national as well as international fronts.
The recent endeavour of the Trinamool Congress, under the guise of the alleged Assam church survey order, is aimed at sabotaging the cordial relationship between the minority voters and the ruling BJP. Mamata, through the letter addressed to the Vatican City, eyes to champion the minorities, by portraying herself as the fiercest contender of PM Modi.

Mamata, who belongs to the long list of opposition leaders, having national ambitions of running for the Prime Minister race, seems to be desperate for bagging minority voters. The recently hatched propaganda by her party, despite serious rebuttal of the Chief Minister of Assam himself, illustrates the aggressive intent of the party in executing the strategy of targeting the ruling BJP.
On the other hand, the TMC, through the alleged letter, seems to also gain international acclamation by targeting the BJP as anti-minority fascist party, and fetch international support for its campaigns in the future.
