Thirumanancheri Temple, Tamil Nadu – Overview
Thirumanancheri Udhavaganathar Temple is a Hindu temple in Thirumanancheri in Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu, India. This temple is located 15 km from Nagapattinam district near river Kaveri and 6 km from Koothalam.
Lord Shiva is the presiding deity in Thirumanancheri Temple. He is also called Udvaganathar. His wife is known as Kokhila. Sri Kalyanasundareswara Swami Temple is another name for this temple. This temple is built by the queen of Cholas sombiyanma devi.
History of this Temple
The history of Thirumanancheri Temple is that Shiva and Parvathi came to earth and got married. Uthvaganathar got angry and cursed Goddess Kokilambal. She came to earth and became the daughter of Bharata Muni. The couple had not met.
Later, Parvathi married Shiva as per the local customs and traditions. Shiva and Parvati experienced human nuances as they went through the process on earth and got married.
There is a form of Shiva in tapasya, called Dakshinamurti. Manmanthan, the god of love, aimed an arrow of flowers at Shiva Peruman. Shiva became angry, and opened his third eye, burning Manmathan to ashes. His wife Rathi Devi begged Shiva to retrieve her husband. Shiva relented and gave Mangalya Pichai to Rathi Devi, and united the couple at this place, which is called Thirumancheri Sthalam.
Shiva and Parvathi stand as a divine couple in this temple. Shiva, in the form of Kalyana Sundareswarar, blesses the devotees and Goddess Kokilambal, at his feet, bows her head in shame.

Places to visit near Thirumanancheri Temple
Thevaram Teerth
This is the most popular temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The unique attraction here is the holy Thevaram, the hymns recited every day in this temple. It is a famous temple that promotes the ancient arts and rituals of Hinduism.
Saptsagar Teerth
It is situated near the Sri Uthavanganatha Swami Temple. The holy lake is believed to contain the holy water of the seven seas. A dip in the water is believed to cure childless couples. Devotees offer milk kheer to Raghu Graha after a holy bath.
Sri Kalyanasundareswara Swami Temple It is located near Mayiladuthrayi, dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Kalyanasundarar. Legends claim that Goddess Parvathi took birth on earth and remarried Lord Shiva. There is another temple in this temple complex dedicated to Lord Varadaraja and his consorts Bhudevi and Sridevi.

By Air- The nearest airport from this temple is Thiruchirapalli which is located at the distance of 115km from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport.
By Train- Nearest railway station from this temple is Mayiladuthurai junction and Kumbakonam junction. From here also you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services.
By Road- There are many buses runs from most of the parts of South India for thirumancheri. You can easily reach this temple by roads as it is well connected with other cities.
