Taratarini Temple, Odisha – Overview

Taratarini Temple is one of the ancient temples of India, situated on the Tara Tarini Hill near Brahmapur city of Odisha. Taratarini Temple is dedicated to twin goddesses i.e., Tara and Tarini and there is one Shaktipeeth each in all the four directions of this temple.

This temple is situated on the hill on the banks of Rushikulya river. It is said that the breast of Goddess Sati is worshiped in this temple. At the same time, this Shakti Peeth is also known as Kalyani Dham.

History of Taratarini Temple

Taratarini is an ancient temple which build in 17th century. One has to climb 999 steps to reach this temple, which is situated on top of Tara Tarini hill or Poornagiri hill. By using Rekha style of architecture this temple is built.

Goddess Tara Tarini was the principal deity of the rulers of the Kalinga Kingdom. The idols of Goddess Tara and Tarini are enshrined in the temple, made of stone and adorned with gold and silver ornaments and precious stones.

Architecture of this Temple

The architectural style of the temple is Rekha style. The temple is surrounded by attractive wild life sanctuary and the area is densely forested with tall giant trees and plants all around. The temple is shaded by orange and white stones on the outer surface and walls. It also has an entrance that overlooks the huge staircase leading up to the temple.

Best time to visit Tara Tarini Temple

Best time to visit Tara Tarini temple is in the month of Chaitra. A grand fair is organized here every Tuesday in the month of Chaitra. The local people believe that the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled by visiting the Goddess on every Tuesday in this month. Not only this, in the month of Chaitra, people come here a lot to get their child shaved on the completion of one year.

How to reach Taratarini Temple

By Air: Nearest Airport to Tara Tarini temple is Biju Patnaik Airport, Bhubaneswar which is located at a distance of about 180 Km. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local bus or taxi.

By Train: The Nearest Railway Station to this temple is Harichandanpur Railway Station which is located at a distance of about 17 KM and Kendujhargarh Railway Station which is located at a distance of about 50 Km from this temple. You can easily reach from here by taking local bus or taxi.

By Road: This temple is located at the distance of 80 KM from Bhubaneshwar and 50 KM from Dist. Headquarters Keonjhar. The roads to this temple are well connected with these cities. You can also easily reach this temple by your own car or by bus from any part of the country.
