Suchindram Temple – Overview

Suchindram Shakti Peeth is located in the southern district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, India. This temple is also known as Maa Narayani Temple. It is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths and is the place where the upper teeth of Maa Sati are believed to have fallen.

The main deities of the temple are Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma in a single form called as Stharanumalayam. It is one of those temples in India in which Trimurti and all the three deities are worshiped in one temple. In this temple Shakti is worshiped as Narayani and Bhairav is worshiped as Sanhar Bhairav.

History of this Temple

The main story of Suchindram is related to the construction of Shakti Peethas. Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to Lord Shiva against her wish. Daksha arranged for a big yajna but did not invite Sati and Shiva. Uninvited, Sati reached the sacrificial place, where Daksha ignored Sati as well as Shiva.

Sati could not tolerate this insult. So, Goddess Sati gave up her life by jumping into the fire of the Havan organized by her father King Daksha. When Lord Shiva was roaming around the universe carrying her burnt body, Lord Vishnu divided the body into 51 parts using his Sudarshan Chakra to pacify him. Out of those 51 organs, the ‘upper tooth’ of Sati fell at this place. Here Sati is called Narayani and Lord Shiva is called Sanghror Sanhar.

According to historical story, Lord Indra, the king of all gods, was relieved of the curse given by Maharishi Gautama at this place.
