History of Purnagiri Temple
The main story of Purnagiri is related to the construction of Shakti Peethas. Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to Lord Shiva against her will. Daksha arranged for a big yajna but did not invite Sati and Shiva. Uninvited, Sati reached the sacrificial place, where Daksha ignored Sati as well as Shiva.
Sati could not tolerate this insult of her husband lord Shiva. So, Goddess Sati gave up her life by jumping into the fire of the Havan organized by her father King Daksha. When Lord Shiva was roaming around the universe carrying his burnt body, Lord Vishnu divided the body into 51 parts using his Sudarshan Chakra to pacify him. Out of those 51 organs, Sati’s ‘navel’ fell at this place.
One of the popular festivals of this temple is Purnagiri Mela. And it is organized by Sri Purnagiri Temple. The fair takes place every year in Chaitra Navratri over a period of two months. These fairs attract a lot of pilgrims. These days many types of people come to the temple. Temple fairs include Mela, Navratri Mela, Vishuvat Sankranti and Kumaon.
