Northeast region development: It appears that after the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, no one has taken the development of the North East as seriously as Prime Minister Modi.
Under the visionary leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) was established in 2001. This was done to bring about holistic development in the region. Unfortunately, subsequent governments didn’t pay the same attention to this important initiative. Now following the footsteps of the former leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a distinct steps for the development of the North East region.
Unprecedented Development
On Tuesday, the 6th of December, the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh reported that, PM Modi has taken an important step to promote the socio-economic development of the region. He has identified 55 central ministries to allocate 10% of their budget towards improving logistics infrastructure in the north-east. This important move will ensure that the North-eastern region of India is better connected to the rest of the nation, benefitting the citizens living there.
In addition to the reform of DONER, the Modi government is undertaking a range of infrastructure projects, including 7 airports since 2014, to ensure the seamless flow of traffic between India and its neighbouring countries. These projects include the construction of highways, bridges and the BBIN initiative, which is a multilateral agreement to facilitate the passage of passengers, personal and cargo vehicles across borders.

Other than the construction of transportation facilities, the Modi government has also established various other centres of learning and development. For example, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Guwahati, a National Sports University in Manipur, Bamboo Technology Parks in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The government is also executing the plan of building 65,000 active Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) in Sikkim.
The central government is taking proactive steps to ensure the development and growth of the Seven Sister states and Sikkim by investing in infrastructure, Information Technology, and initiatives to empower women.
North-east can be the engine of India’s development
Union Minister Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh stated that the Northeast region is being embraced with the dawn of fresh prospects. The region has the possibility to become the Manufacturing Hub of the country, due to the Prime Minister’s ‘Gati Shakti’ initiative to provide seamless multimodal connectivity of world-class standards.
Creating a favourable environment for manufacturing to thrive, requires both a reliable infrastructure and an atmosphere of peace and security. By investing in both, businesses have the confidence to develop, leading to a prosperous and sustainable economy. The Modi government is closely monitoring all these aspects and actively working hard to reduce the insurgency and minimise the casualties of security forces.

From securing the chicken neck to connecting the northeast region via the Bangladesh route, the government is making every effort to ensure the successful growth of the northeast region. If everything goes well according to plan, the future of the Northeast looks very promising.
People to people connection
There was a time when the people of the Northeast region used to experience discrimination in the national capital. However, PM Modi in one of his visits to the North-east said that “you guys don’t have to come to Delhi, Delhi will come to you.” He is endeavouring to fulfil his promise and commitment. He has been striving to create world-class infrastructure, encouraging start-up culture among the youth and conducting various campaigns to spread awareness on the importance of ending discrimination.
The Modi government has taken significant steps to ensure that individuals from the North-eastern states of India no longer face discrimination and can work in metropolitan cities on an equal footing with other citizens. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making untiring efforts to harness the potential of the people of North East for the overall success of the nation.
