Kalikambal Temple, Channai – Overview
The Kalikambal Temple is dedicated to Lord Kamakshi and is situated at the corner of Parry, Chennai. The temple was initially located by the sea, and is located at the present location, and is famous as one of the major temples in South India.
This temple is considered to be one of the most powerful temples, which attracts a lot of devotees. The temple is believed to have been worshiped by the great poet Bharathiar, who was an ardent devotee of Goddess Kali. This temple is considered one of the iconic temples of Chennai.
History of this Temple
The temple of Kalikambal is dedicated to the Maratha kings, the temple used to have a separate location earlier, and was very close to the sea. It was shifted to its present location around the 16th century.
The great warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have worshiped in this temple. It was also believed that the deity was once in a fierce form, and later transformed into a gentle goddess. The chariot festival of this temple is very prominent.
Goddess Kamakshi is considered as the mother of all living beings, and is considered to be extremely benevolent. She grants boons to her devotees, who worship her with faith.
The Kalikambal Temple is built in the South-Indian Dravidian style of architecture. It has two important deities of Sri Kaligambal, an incarnation of Goddess Kamakshi and Lord Kamdeshwara, an incarnation of Lord Shiva enshrined here.
There are several other temples for Lord Ganesha, Lord Varuna, Lord Indra, Lord Vishwakarma and a special temple for Lord Kubera, the goddess of wealth. The gopuram or tower of the temple is made up of four layers, with lots of sculptures, and intricate work. This temple houses the Arthameru, which was established by Sri Adi Shankar.

By Road- The nearest bus stop to the temple is George Town. Other means of road transport are also easily available in this region to reach this temple.
