Efforts to save Bhagat Singh from hanging
Under sections 129, 302 and Explosive Substances Act 4 and 6F and many other sections Bhagat Singh was sentenced to death along with Rajguru and Sukhdev on the basis of Indian Penal Code.
On February 17, 1931, Gandhiji met the Viceroy for Bhagat Singh’s pardon, but to no avail. All this was happening against the wishes of Bhagat Singh, at that time he said, “Revolutionaries have to die, because their death only strengthens their campaign, not appeal to the court”.

Hanging and cremation of Bhagat Singh
On the evening of 23 March 1931 Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged. It is said that while going to the gallows, all three were singing the song ‘Mera Rang De Basanti Chola’ in fun. Due to the fear of people not starting any kind of movement because of the hanging, the British cut their bodies into small pieces and carried them away in sacks and burnt them with kerosene. Seeing the crowd of people coming, the British threw his dead body into the Sutluj river. Then people identified him from the pieces of his body and duly cremated him.
