Narwar – History
Narvar is named after the great king Nal, who is also known as Shrestha (Var) Nar. Narwar used to be a district till the year 1901, but the Sikander rulers made it a district by establishing the town of Shivpuri. Apart from the relics of Mahabharata, Narwar is also witness to the world-famous battle of Alha-Udal.
Narvar was also named after Nal, the son of King Veersen. In the Mahabharata’s Vanparva, when Dharmaraj had to leave his glory and wandered from forest to forest, sage Vrihadashva narrated the story of King Nal. Historian Arun Prasad says that during the Mahabharata period, when the Pandavas were wandering from forest to forest after losing everything in gambling, Yudhishthira asked sage Vrihadashva what had we done that we had to suffer all this.
After this, the sage told Yudhishthira that his younger brother had also snatched away everything after defeating Nala, the king of Narvar, in a game of deceit. King Nal was so majestic that he was going towards the forest with his wife, then all the kangaroos of the palace bowed down in his respect. Pasar Devi had come and lay down at the door of the fort. His temple is still built here. Its account also comes in the Vanparva of Mahabharata. That’s why King Nal has been called the best.
Aurangzeb, sikander ruled on Narwar
Narwar has also been ruled by Rajputs and Sikander rulers including Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. That’s why the marks of change of power from time to time are seen in the fort here. The Kachwahas also ruled in Narvar, but they could not maintain it for long.

Narvar was also the in-laws of world famous warrior Udal. Narwar fort is also mentioned in the 52 battles fought in Alakhand. Raja Nal’s fort is still present in Narwar. The Archaeological Department has now preserved it and made it a heritage. Here Lodhi Mata Temple, Pasar Devi Temple, Chaudah Mahadev, 8 Kuan 9 Bawdi, Tapkeshwar Mahadev etc. Are places worth seeing.
