Covid Protests China: It is believed that hunger is the biggest creator of evil. It is true by historical standards. However, the 21st century is a lot different than previous ones. The fight to kill depravity has reached such a level that people are now deprived of deprivations. It is being manifested in the call for freedom in China. Under Jinping, the Mao Empire is losing acceptability faster than any monarchy ever did.

Chinese are again on the roads. This time the protests are trickling down to the last mile of the country. The instant reason behind the massive Covid Protest is the fire in an apartment in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. Despite the apartment catching fire, people were restricted from accessing public places to save their lives. Apparently, Jinping’s Police preferred people to die from fire over Covid deaths.
Xi has used Covid as a tool to check people’s tolerance. People are locked inside their homes under his zero-Covid policy. CCP has taken absolute control over production and distribution. Many emergency services are getting delayed due to government control. This happened all across the country including the main cities of Beijing and Shanghai as well. No wonder, even the most affluent section of the Chinese population wants freedom from Xi.

Gauging the extent of covid protests
These covid protests have come off as a staggering development for even the closest observers of how Jinping functions. Xi and his Communist Party have established absolute control over information dissemination networks in China. Despite that, the Covid Protests are spreading like wildfire. Moreover, they are not asking for relief from harsh and authoritarian Covid policies. Instead, ‘Jinping step down’ is the common theme combining this Long March.
Yes, the covid protests are enormous but it is not new for Xi. Right from the time, he became President, Xi’s iron grip has been subjected to multiple tests. Initially, only experts of the bunch questioned him on issues related to jingoistic foreign policy and the economy. Not everyone in China likes his enmity with big powers like India and the USA. Covid and related lockdowns have only worsened the scenario.
Initially, it was only his lockdown policies that were unpopular, but later his economic policy also came under the radar. His crackdowns on wealth creators like Jack Ma and many others bereft lots of Chinese banks of money. So much so that people were down on roads and Xi had to deploy the military to curtail them. There were rumours of a coup just before the elections which indicate that man is unpopular among the masses as well as experienced and more sensible brass of CCP.

First time in CCP’s history
The voices of dissent are real. They are also unique when we gauge their frequency. Right from the time, Mao forced the Kuomintang party to flee to Taiwan, anti-government protests have never been a norm in any administration. When Mao came to power, the Chinese wanted something better from the atrocious Japanese. Mao did not disappoint as he kept them under illusion by propagating rhetoric like “THE GREAT LEAP” and “CULTURAL REVOLUTION”. Surely, millions died, but Mao kept his hold on power, thanks to state control and making lofty promises to people.
After Mao’s death, Xiaoping introduced state control capitalism. His policies resulted in 80 crores of Chinese coming out of the poverty line in 40 years. In these years, the voices of dissent started to die. Surely, some occasional acts of brilliance such as the Democracy wall, the 1989 Tiananmen square protest, Wukan protests did come to the fore, but CCP crushed them with iron fists.

Jinping has rendered Police state useless
This is where Jinping’s regime is different. People’s discontent does not seem to end and state control is continuously failing. People are finding innovative ways to outdo the whimsical decisions of the CCP regime. This is self-explanatory as it signifies desperation to fly free and nothing else. Jinping is weakening the very foundation of the CCP. He has used force so much that it has lost its currency.
Some experts estimate that Mao Zedong killed 40 million people while some estimate 80 million. The number hardly matters once it crosses 10 million. Despite those genocides, the Communist regime did not come under threat. It came under threat in 2022, the time when China is the second largest economy and not a depraved country. It speaks volumes about Xi’s unpopularity.
