Himesh Reshammiya – The Jack of all Trades

Badass Ravikumar Trailer

Badass Ravikumar Trailer: There are many facets of Cinema. For some it can be a medium to showcase the culture of their region – Kantara for that matter did this superbly. For others, it can be a way of soft power or maybe just a way of entertainment.

India is a home to many entertainment industries. They cover a wide spectrum of genres to entertain their audiences. But what if I say that all of them left a particular genre – Spoof or parody, vacant. It has been mostly ostracised as a useless unskilled genre. But it can be a way of light-hearted entertainment for massy audience. Sensing a business opportunity in this vacant genre, Himesh Reshammiya is ready to storm the theatres with a nonsensical masala movie – Badass Ravikumar.

Can characters like Ravi Kumar find appeal among the masses?

Recently, popular singer Himesh Reshammiya released the ‘Title announcement teaser’ of his upcoming movie Badass Ravikumar. The singer turned actor has tried to exploit the strong sentiments of audiences around his earlier character Ravi Kumar.

After the teaser aired, it soon became the talk of the town. It has become a worthy meme material. Even after getting strong backlash from film critics, its numbers are only on the rise. Within just three days, it has gained 27 million views on YouTube alone. This highlights the fact that the movie Badass Ravikumar has become insanely popular.

It is often said that there is no such thing as bad publicity. This especially applies in the field of art. Artists thrive for publicity – good or bad as without that they would have to spend huge sums to market their art. This is exactly what is going in favour of Himesh Reshammiya. All the negative aspects of the movie evaporate on the fact that the movie is a pure masala entertainment movie. It uses many blunt references from other movies clearly highlighting that it will be a spoof or parody movie.

Low Budget, high entertainer

This movie is said to be part of ‘The Xpose Universe’. Earlier, Himesh played the protagonist called Ravikumar in the movie Expose. The movie was a cringe fest and that too was harshly criticised by the film critics and class-audiences. But it was a financial success for Himesh Reshammiya and the team. It was made with a budget of Rs 16 crore and recorded a business of Rs 22 crores. Going by the current trend in Bollywood, it has become a Himalayan task to recover a movie’s budget. The latest movie too seems to know this fact.

Most of the scenes in the teaser appear to be shot in front of the green screen and hence the budget will be such that Himesh Reshammiya can pull that much alone on the basis of his songs.

Further, if the movie clicks and taps the potential of the vacant spoof and parody genre, it can make it big. Film Critic Sahil Chandel has nicely explained the business model of the spoof or parody genre in India and Hollywood.

In early 2000s, Himesh Reshammiya demolished all the negativity around his singing skills. He made a unique fan base and shattered the biases against his nasal singing. Now with his mass masala low budget nonsensical entertainer movie, he is ready to make his inroads in the spoof and parody genre. If he gets success, he may become India’s Austin Powers who made it big in the US on the basis of parody movies.
