The country was held hostage for more than a year by alleged farmers for all the wrong reasons. From the desecration of the Red Fort to the massive destruction of properties, from the spreading of COVID to the peddling of Khalistani agendas, the so-called farmers became the reason for many funerals in the country.
During this period, it was deliberately peddled by the left-liberal media that the central government with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an anti-farmers government. It was during this time that the BJP was painted as “pro-corporate.” However, the reality on the ground is far different from what’s being propagated on social media.
Karnataka CM Bommai announces pro-farmers move
Karnataka’s chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai, announced the introduction of a new law that would stop the confiscation of farmers’ property over the delay of loan payments.
While speaking at the concluding session of Krishi Mela and distributing awards to farmers at the Gandhi Krishi Vignan Kendra (GKVK) campus, he advocated for a better financial environment for the farmers. Bommai announced that in the case of non-payment of loans taken for agricultural purposes, farmers will be given more time for repayment instead of confiscating or auctioning their property.
Bommai cited that the economic growth of any and every state, including Karnataka, depended on agriculture. Bommai also promised to launch more farmer-friendly programs, which included giving loans upto 10 lakh additional farmers from the current year itself. Emphasizing the need to go scientific, CM Bommai asked the farmers to try new varieties to increase productivity and take up comprehensive agriculture.

Bommai hits where it hurts the most
With the announcement, Bommai clarified that agricultural schemes must be in tune with the agricultural sector. CM Bommai’s move can be seen as a way to understand and respond to the plights of farmers at a time when the BJP governments are constantly accused of compromising farmers’ interests at the hands of corporates.
The move tends to portray the relationship BJP government’s hold with the agrarian communities across India. The BJP government has categorically focused on the betterment of the farmer community, and that is visible from the schemes brought in by the Atal Vihari government as well as the Narendra Modi government.
CM Bommai too had announced several measures to increase the income of farmers. The goal was to double it, taking inspiration from the Narendra Modi government, which has set the goal of doubling farmers’ income by 2023–2024.
This is set to be realised by improving crop and livestock productivity, increasing efficiency in resource utilisation, and saving on production costs. The BJP government has won in growth and development, and with CM Bommai’s announcement, it seems it will win the narrative too.
The impact
Karnataka has a massive base of farmers, with more than 75 % of them being small and medium farmers. The agrarian community makes up the major voting chunk, which is why Deve Gowda practised farmers-dominated politics. For the unaware, Kumaraswamy had announced a Rs 48,000 crore farm loan waiver – one of the biggest in the state in the last elections.
But this time, Bommai is all set to secure the support of the agricultural community, just like CM Yogi Adityanath did in the Uttar Pradesh elections earlier this year. It was dubbed that the West UP will vote against the BJP as there is rampant anger among the farmers who dominate the region regarding the farm laws. However, on the contrary, the West UP and the Jat farmers complimented the BJP’s victory.
