Kanta Laga in Ram Leela and Remix Bhajans in Jagratas – The Unsanatani celebrations

Woman dances to ‘Kanta Laga’ in Ram Leela event

‘Kanta Laga’ in Ram Leela event: Recently, a video went viral on social media, where a woman was seen touching the feet of Arun Govil, actor who played the role of Bhagwan Ram, at the airport. Such is the impact of an actor who merely played the role in Ramanand Sagar’s television series Ramayan. The series and the actors who played different roles continue to be revered and hailed as God by the audience till date. This is the impact religion and religious epics seem to have on the minds of people. Then comes the celebration of grand Hindu festivals. These festivals not only bring joy with them, but also enrich us on the level of the value system. Every year, Vijayadasmi marks the win of good over evil. But, what teachings can these festivals and their celebration impart, if the celebration process itself gets morally corrupt.

In the era of social media, it is hard that incidents remain secluded as the viral videos reveal the truth within no time. One such video went viral on the occasion of Dussehra from the Ramleela celebration event in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal. In the viral video, a woman was seen dancing to the song ‘Kanta Laga’ while actors portraying the characters of Ramayana in the Ram Leela watch her performance. The video has raised a serious question over the intent of the organisers. Why was a dancer first of all called at a Ram Leela event, and why a performance on such an obscene song was being funded. Well, after the video went viral, an FIR has been lodged against 10 members of a Ramleela committee.

Another video surfaced from Hapur, where two professional dancers can be seen trying to woo Ravana sitting on the stage.

A similar incident was reported two years ago, where young girls were made to perform obscene dance at Ramleela in UP’s Rampur district. The locals had claimed that it was done to earn quick money.

Vulgar Songs during immersion & Remix Bhajans

If personal experiences are taken into account, all of us have heard songs like ‘Gandi Baat’, ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ or ‘Teri Ankhya ka yo kajal’ either playing during Puja, within Pandals and if not during Visarjan (idol immersion). Dancing to the tunes of item numbers such as ‘Munni Badnam hui’ or ‘Sheila ki Jawani’ has been a common practice that is becoming the part of mainstream society for decades now.

The administration has however attempted various crackdown on such practices. The Police had earlier warned of seizing the DJ system if vulgar songs are heard playing. There have been multiple incidents of penalising the organisers for the same.

Not only this, during the Garba and Dandiya events, it is a common practice of playing indecent dance numbers and boys and girls, even grown-up adults are seen dancing obscenely on the same.

The way ahead

As the secularisation of the society took place, the followers of Sanatan Dharma were the first to trace the development, disregarding their Hindu way of life. Such aforementioned examples can be put in the bracket of obscenity, whose menace needs to be curbed. And the onus is upon the followers of Sanatan Dharma themselves.

One such heart-warming incident happened in Rajgarh, Madhya Pradesh where a man was seen stopping a vulgar dance being performed right in front of Maa Durga’s murti and her mandap. He conveyed the organisers that the Durga mandap was set up with the aim of doing bhakti, aarti, puja, organising Garba. The organisers are running a money-generation racket in the name of festival celebration, there is no denying the fact.

Dealing with obscenity, the Yogi way

Earlier, during the Kanwar Yatra, Uttar Pradesh’s CM Yogi Adityanath has wilfully controlled the menace. Yogi had directed the ones participating in kanwar yatras to not play vulgar movie songs. CM Yogi in his statement said, “Kanwar Yatra is about to begin. Playing vulgar film songs and DJs do not go with religious feelings. Also, it is improper to indulge in gambling after worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali.”

Steps like these are need of the hour as the ‘secular’ practices is leading to denigration of Hindu Dharma and dismantling of traditional Dharmic institutions. The major Hindu society has been alienated from its roots and there is need to trace back our Dharmic footprints.
