India avenges its ‘Masood Azhar’ humiliation by blocking China on a crucial proposal

Mohammad Masood Azhar Alvi is the name of a man guilty of bringing jihad to India, had founded the terror outfit named Jaish-e-Mohammad. JeM is responsible for bloodshed in India, as it carried out some dastardly terror attack. 2001 Parliament Attacks, 2008 Mumbai Attack, 2016 Pathankot Attack and 2019 Pulwama attack to name few. He was finally designated as a global terrorist by the UN Security Council’s 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee in May, 2019. This was hailed as a major diplomatic win for India. But this could not have been possible without bringing China to its knees, as China was guilty of blocking India’s attempts to secure the designation for almost a decade. Now, India has avenged Masood Azhar humiliation.

China cries AUKUS at the IAEA

During the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which was recently held in Vienna from 26- 30 September, China raised its concerns regarding AUKUS. China had proposed a draft resolution against the AUKUS for seeking to provide Australia with nuclear powered submarines. The AUKUS is a trilateral security partnership between the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. The leaders of these nations have made significant progress in the path of Australia acquiring nuclear-powered submarines armed with conventional weapons and this is what has raised Beijing’s concerns.

China argued that AUKUS’s initiative was in violation of their responsibilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). For this, the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China had requested the inclusion of an item titled, “Transfer of nuclear materials in the context of AUKUS and its safeguards in all aspects under the NPT” to the agenda of the 66th (2022) regular session of the General Conference through a letter submitted to the Director General.

India thwarts China, forces China to backtrack

The paper dragon who would have made an article published in Global Times about its supreme diplomacy but  had to backtrack at the IAEA, courtesy India.  Halting China and forcing it to withdraw its draft resolution is not an easy task? How did India actually crack it? To understand how things unfolded we need to decode India’s diplomatic moves at the IAEA.

IAEA comprises a 35-member Board of Governors and General Conference of all the member states. The General Conference holds an annual meeting at the IAEA Headquarters, situated in Vienna. Whereas the Board meets five times a year and also in Vienna. And India is a board member for 2021-2022. The Indian Mission to the IAEA in Vienna worked closely with many IAEA member states that helped the development of a consensus on the matter. India ensured that the resolution did not get majority support. India worked majorly with the smaller countries and India’s clear stance helped smaller nations take a clear stand on the Chinese proposal, vehemently oppose it. China apprehended that it would not receive majority support on the resolution and hence it had to withdraw it to save its face.

What India gained?

India, not being a signatory of the NPT, has always advocated for peace in the world with its arsenal full with ammunition. It is rightly said that it is arms that bring peace. For instance, if Ukraine would not had given up its nukes, the probability is that the situation might have been different. Although, the West’s hypocrisy has no limit, and India’s economy is surging at a time when the alleged mightiest are facing the threat of looming recession. This move of thwarting China can be seen as a step by India to keep the West on tenterhooks. The ones, till now critical of India-Russia bonhomie, have come to appreciate India’s pro-AUKUS move at the IAEA. The AUKUS group has itself appreciated India’s “deft diplomacy”. Further, strengthening India’s stand in the diplomatic world.

China’s desperation proves it fell for the trap

China had categorically maintained that the AUKUS initiative would have a negative impact on international efforts to resolve the Korean Peninsula and Iranian nuclear issues and Iranian nuclear issues. To state simply, AUKUS is seen as an effort by the West to counter China’s might and influence, like its military build-up near Taiwan and aggressiveness in the Indo-Pacific and South China Sea. And this is what has been giving sleep nights to the paper dragon.

AUKUS leaders have this thing clear in their head and their anti-China force had been welcomed by the world with open arms. Had America formed a QUAD plus framework with AUKUS within would have been the best for us? But it has hit the bull’s eye, the formation of AUKUS and the back-to-back deals have infuriated China in incredible proportions. China went around the globe saying things like AUKUS will aggravate the arms race in the region or AUKUS will make Australia “a potential nuclear war target” for China. However, it proved to be of no help.

What will China do, with Japan already upping its game and now AUKUS strengthening Australia? China did what was expected, it started intimidating its smaller as well as bigger neighbours, like Taiwan and India respectively. This resulted in corning of China, with China’s neighbourhood either going Atmanirbhar like India or getting aligned with the West and both put China in a precarious situation. In this time, will China be able to handle the humiliation it suffered at the hands of India?
