United Nations is at the brink of becoming another ‘League of Nations’

League of Nations

We have commonly heard that the ‘United Nations is a stooge of the West’, specifically America, ‘The America holds the UN hostage’.  Well, all that I can say is the United Nations is allowing the same. All the progress it did was that it progressed from failing to a failed organisation. This is what happens to an organisation that becomes a bureaucratic behemoth, bending to their biggest sponsors. And if it doesn’t reform, the day is not far when the United Nations will turn into another ‘League of Nations.’

UN to organise 77th General Assembly

The United Nations is all set to organise its 77th annual session under title, UNGA 75 (United Nations General Assembly) from 13 September 2022. To attend this, all the members need to travel to the US, as the UN building, the headquarters is situated in the USA’s New York. But who can travel? The ones need to attend the meet. Actually, No! For this meet only those can travel whom the US allows, as it’s in the jurisdiction of the United States to grant the visas. And, if the Biden administration does not wish, a country cannot travel to the US to attend the UN meet. This is what is happening with Russia.

US planning to block Russia

In Russian President Valdimir Putin’s words, Russia began its military operation in Ukraine to demilitarise and deNazify Ukraine on February 24. It was since this day that the equation between the two poles, the US and Russia, have worsened. On one side America has been imposing sanctions after sanctions on Russia while on the other hand Russia has started trading in Rubble. Now, after sanctioning Russia, the US aims to block Russia from the United Nations.

Russia calls it alarming

The Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov aimed to travel to the US along with his delegation to attend the UN General Assembly. However, till date, they have not received entry visas from the US. And Russia has called this alarming.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Neennzia in letter to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that this was “alarming” because during the past several months Washington had been “constantly refusing to grant entry visas” to a number of Russian delegated for the UN events. Nebenzia added that no U.S. visas had yet been granted to journalists accompanying Lavrov and the flight crew.

So, can the US decide against granting visas to ones willing to access United Nations? The Washington says that it can on the basis of “security, terrorism and foreign policy.” In this matter however, the US has said that it has not been able to grant visas due to limited staff.

UN on its way to become League of Nations 2.0

So, what kind of a situation will happen due to the recent tussle. Well, it can be said that the UN may become the League of Nations 2.0. So, what exactly was the League of Nations, and what’s wrong if the UN progresses to become that.

League of Nations, often referred to as the ‘predecessor of the United Nations’, was an intergovernmental organisation that was aimed to promote international co-operation, and to achieve peace and security. But, the process of communication within the countries did not allow a smooth interaction and the second world war could be attributed to the failure of League of Nations.

If UN fails to deliver, which it already has, Russia may drift away from the United Nations and may take along with it the countries of the not so formal Eastern block. Not to forget, Russia has already hinted at forming a new G8 with India.

So, how would the world look and function with two UN like organisations with similar set of goals? Disastrous to say in a word.
