Jammu and Kashmir is changing, once and for all

Jammu and Kashmir

The serene valleys in the mighty Himalayas were pushed to the path of chaos, stagnation and fear. The terror infrastructure ingrained a constant fear of retributive violence and cycle of killings for taking any step towards progress, modernity and open tolerant society.

Under the constant fear of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, ‘the Valley of Saints’ creeped without offering much of developmental work and progress to its residents.

However, the zero-tolerance policy against terrorism by the J&K administration and Modi government, development and peace has ushered in the valley.

It has instilled a hope of a reformed Union Territory which has progressed ahead of its gory past.

Cinema will return to the cradle of art and culture

Have you ever noticed the Dal Lake or the beautiful landscape of J&K in any of the Bollywood movies? Ironically, Hindi and regional cinemas did relentless shootings in the valley but the then J&K government imposed the iron curtain on theatres in the erstwhile J&K state. But, as they say there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

The Union Territory under the able leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, is bringing the UT back on track of development, progress and towards an open tolerant society.

Recently, the J&K LG Manoj Sinha inaugurated cinema halls in Kashmir’s Shopian and Pulwama. He further added that soon theatres will be inaugurated in every district in J&K.

At the inauguration, LG Sinha said, “We will build such multipurpose cinema halls in every district of Jammu and Kashmir soon. Today, I dedicate such cinema halls to the youth of Pulwama and Shopian.”

In few days, Kashmir’s first INOX multiplex will open in Somwar, Srinagar. It has three movie theatres with a total capacity of 520 persons.

Interestingly, till the 1980s the entertainment industry was flourishing in J&K. The region had almost a dozen of independent movie theaters.

However, they were forced to close their business due to constant threats from Jihadi outfits. Later, all the efforts of authorities were soiled by the barrel of guns and terror attacks.

In September 1999, the Regal Cinema in Lal Chowk suffered a devastating grenade attack and all such terror incidents forced the theatre owners to close the businesses to save their lives.

Moreover, some theatres who carried their business even after constant threat of terror, were forced to wind up due to the poor response from the local residents. Neelam and Broadway Cinemas were prominent among such theatre.

Developmental work and Progress in J&K

In the first week of October, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit the Union territory. Reportedly, he will make a major announcement for the Pahari community.

The community has been demanding special status in the state; chances are they will be accepted during the Home Minister’s visit to the UT. He will also announce multiple developmental projects for J&K.

As per media reports, Home Minister Amit Shah will hold separate meetings with members of the business community, with the focus on tourism sector. The meeting will likely include hotel owners and businessmen related to tourism and other allied sectors.

This will be his second visit after the abrogation of Article 370. During his visit, he may hold meetings with leaders of different political parties and panchayat representatives.

Additionally, the Union government has been in talks with foreign nations to heavily invest for the development and progress of the UT.
The real estate sector is attracting huge investment. Evidently, earlier it garnered Rs 18,300 crores in one go for the development of the real estate sector in the state.
Along with development works, the politics, too, is going through a drastic change in the UT. The abrogation of Article 370 is a done deal and the recent developments suggest that elections may be round the corner.
The Election Commission has been reforming the election process as well as undoing the past travesty with certain voters.
With return of normalcy, ongoing developmental works and political participation, things are back on track and has poised well in the Union Territory.
All these positive reforms highlight that Jammu and Kashmir is changing for good and soon we would be able to undo the remaining of the injustices done due to the Pakistan sponsored terrorism.
