Blinded by appeasement, Hemant Soren goes the Mulayam way

Soren statement

On the 23rd of August, a class 12th student, Ankita Kumari was set ablaze by her neighbour named Shahrukh Hussain for rejecting his proposal and advances. As she still awaits justice, Politicians have started to play their dirty politics. Where a teenage girl was set ablaze in Dumka, Jharkhand, rather than taking a strong stance on the case, the Jharkhand CM, Hemant Soren, is busy trivialising the heinous crime.

Shameful Statement of Soren

While downplaying the increasing crime against women in Jharkhand, Hemant Soren talking to the press stated, “Ghatna to hoti rehti hain, ghatna kahan nahi hota hai. Ghatna to bol ke aata nahi hai. Isko kis tareeke se liya jaaye.” (sic) (The incidents do happen, and happen everywhere, and they do not warn before happening. How one can take it?).

It is pertinent to know that in recent times, Jharkhand has seen complete lawlessness against women. On one hand, a teenage girl Ankita was set ablaze alive by a stalker Shahrukh Hussain. On the other, within some days, another tribal girl was raped and found hanging from a tree in the same district, Dumka.

The National Crime Records Bureau’s ‘Crime Data 2021′ also shows that the crimes in Jharkhand are on exponential rise.

Crimes in Jharkhand Data
Crime Against Children 1867
Rape Crimes Against Minors Girls 346
Acid Attack 2
Sexual Abuse 217
Communal Incidents 100

Rather than ensuring Justice for victims, authorities in Jharkhand are busy in downplaying the crime. Earlier, police tried to manipulate the case by extending the age of Ankita to make her an adult and now the CM is busy in trivialising the heinous crime. The shameful statement of Soren reminds us of the earlier statement of Mulayam Singh Yadav on a rape case.

Hemant Soren goes the Mulayam way

While addressing a rally on 10 April 2014, the Former Chief Minister of UP, Mulayam Singh Yadav had given a similar kind of controversial statement on rape. He said, “Ladkiyan pehle dosti karti hain. Ladke-ladki mein matbhed ho jata hai. Matbhed hone key baad usey rape ka naam dey deti hain. Ladko sey galti ho jati hai. Kya rape case mein phasi di jayegi?” (sic) (First girls develop friendship with boys. When differences occur, they level rape charges. Boys commit mistakes. Will they be hanged for rape?)

While referring to the Shakti Mills gang-rape case, he stated, “Those who level false allegations will also be punished… In Mumbai also, the rape accused have been sentenced to be hanged.” (sic)

It is also important that Mulayam Singh Yadav’s criticism of Shakti Mills gang rape conviction is similar to statement of Hemant Soren. In the 2013 Mumbai Shakti Mills gang rape case, a 22-year-old photojournalist was gang-raped by five people. The criminals convicted in the case were Mohammed Kasim, Hafiz Shaikh, Mohammed Salim Ansari, Siraj Rehman Khan and Mohammed Ashfaq Sheikh. Also, two more juveniles were sent to reform school in this case.

Considering the religion of the convicted, it was obvious that Mulayam Singh Yadav would criticize the system. As they form a major vote bank of the Samajwadi Party.

Similarly, the accused in both of the crimes in Dumka belong to the same community. Congress, Rashtriya Janta Dal and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha have formed a coalition in Jharkhand and they are known to give special treatment to the particular community, which blindly votes for them. So, it’s obvious that Hemant Soren would try to downplay the incident and save the perpetrators.
