Sisodia can talk about Maharana Pratap, heritage, lineage and everything, but won’t talk about liquor policy

PC: Outlook India

The blood behind the formation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was to change the structure of politics of India. The anti-corruption movement was the highest virtue, which the party claimed to advance in the administration system. The AAP leadership have consistently vowed to completely alter the nature and manner of politics done in India. They pledged of never doing politics in the name of religion, region, or caste. The sole agenda and corruption-free administration was the ideology. However, after the 9 long years the foundation, the party has been an abject failure with nothing substantial to exhibit.

In the recent turn of events, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked Manish Sisodia, the deputy CM of Delhi, on corruption charges. These allegations are related to irregularities in framing and implementing the excise policy of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Concerning the charges, on 19 August 2022, the CBI conducted search raids at 31 locations including in the regions of Delhi, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Bengaluru. This has led to the recovery of incriminating documents, articles, digital records and other undisclosed evidences.

Sisodia and his caste politics

Rather than clarifying against the charges held by CBI, the deputy CM Sisodia resorted to the time-tested tactics of diverting attention from the corruption scandal. He not only made false allegations against the BJP but did not shy away from playing politics in the name of caste.

In a series of rampant tweet, Sisodia claimed that BJP has offered to close the cases against him if he breaks with AAP and joins BJP. He stated, “BJP’s message has come to me – break “AAP” and join BJP, will get all CBI ED cases closed”.

Declining the alleged offer Sisodia further added, “My reply to BJP – I am a Rajput, a descendant of Maharana Pratap. I will cut off my head but will not bow down in front of the corrupt conspirators. All the cases against me are false. Do whatever you want to do.”

In another of his tweet, Manish Sisodia named Arvind Kejriwal as his political ‘guru’, quoting, “Arvind Kejriwal Sir is my political mentor, I will never betray him. I did not come to become CM, my dream is – every child of the country should get a good education, and only then India will become number 1 country. Only Kejriwal Ji can do this work in the whole country.”

The Corruption Charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against the Deputy Chief Minister, GNCTD of Delhi, and others including Commissioner (Excise), Deputy Commissioner (Excise), then Assistant Commissioner (Excise), officials present at that point.

All of GNCTD, Delhi; 10 liquor licensees, their associates & unknown others which is based on a reference from Ministry of Home Affairs (GOI) related to alleged irregularities in framing & implementation of the excise policy of GNCTD were also charged.

According to the CBI, it was alleged that irregularities were committed including modifications in the Excise Policy, extending undue favours to the licensees, frequenting waiver or reduction in licence fee, and extension of L-1 license without approval.

It was also alleged that illegal gains on account of these acts were diverted to concerned public servants by private parties which were recorded through false entries in their books of accounts.

Except on liquor policy, Sisodia is a blabbermouth.

Sisodia has taken a vow of silence regarding the corruption charges and irregularities in the Excise Policy. Reports suggest that the Excise Policy 2021-22 was implemented with the prima facie violations of GNCTS Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules 1993, Delhi Excise Act 2009, and Delhi Excise Rules 2010.

Manish Sisodia, who holds the position in health ministry and deputy CM, also has jurisdiction in the excise portfolio. It is alleged that the changes made under the Excise policy was an instrument to route funds collected from liquor licensees.

FIR registered under the Prevention Corruption Act by CBI suggests that around 4 to 5 crores in the two payments have been accumulated by Sisodia through his close associates.

In this whole corruption fiasco, neither Sisodia nor the ‘Kattar Imandar’ CM has failed to utter a word about the rules and procedures according to which they have enacted and implemented the Excise Policy. He never clarified or apprised the public about his position on the alleged corruption charges. Why did he change the policy violating the set rules, procedures and statutory laws? Why now, he has announced revising the current policy?

Rather than clarifying his stand about the corruption scandal, he is trying to tie his lineage to Maharana Pratap. The leader of common man, who pledged to never indulge in any kind of societal categorisation is now claiming to be the descendant of Rajputs. Throughout their whole activism career, Manish Sisodia and his company never refrained themselves from making any corruption allegations against anyone whether from politics or corporates.

Taking a stack of RTI papers as evidence, Kejriwal and Co. made their way to power and have now resorted back to the same-old caste politics which they condemned. Caste, region, or religions are the ace-in-the-hole for the politicians to advance their political career and so far, Sisodia seems to be doing the same.
