From 50 screens to 100 crores and beyond : Kartikeya 2 is a fairytale actually turning true

“Unpredictable” – this is the only word that comes to my mind these days whenever I hear the word “Bollywood.” Who would have imagined that Aamir Khan starrer ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ will bite the dust as it was one of the most anticipated films of 2022? What transpired after the release or I would say, even before the release, does not need any introduction. While we were yet to accept the reality, here is another unpredictable event turning true.

Karthikeya 2 dominates the box-office

Nikhil Siddhartha starrer Karthikeya 2 was released two weeks back at the box office. While south-Indian films continue to dominate the Indian cinema and box office as well, another Telugu film “Karthikeya 2” has crossed the 100-crore mark at the global box office.

Nikhil and the entire team of Karthikeya 2 reached the Kurnool exhibition ground to celebrate the massive success at the global box office. Taran Adarsh, the film critic, took to Twitter to inform about the record that Karthikeya 2 has made with its box office collection. He tweeted, “The Hindi version of Karthikeya 2 has also set new records and showed a gradual growth at the box office. Trade expert Taran Adarsh posted the updated collection, and wrote, “#Karthikeya2 jumps in Week 2… Strong word of mouth is converting into footfalls… Lack of major competition also helped… [Week 2] Fri 2.46 cr, Sat 3.04 cr, Sun 4.07 cr, Mon 98 lacs, Tue 1.15 cr, Wed 95 lacs, Thu 89 lacs. Total: ₹ 19.29 cr. #India biz. HINDI version.” (sic)

50 screens and bad word of mouth couldn’t stop Karthikeya 2

You see, the film was given only 50 screens for its release. It has been an exciting journey for the film as it made it to 1000 screens. While on the other hand, Taapsee Pannu’s Dobaaraa was left with only finger-countable shows as the poor performance of the film led to the cancellation of its shows. The actor of the film Karthikeya 2 is humble enough to express his gratitude to Hindi viewers. The actor said: “Hello, I am your Nikhil, yes I am Karthikeya 2 actor Nikhil. I just wanted to tell you all one thing. I wanted to thank you for all the love you have showered on the film. We started on 50 screens and now the film is being played in over 1,000 theatres across India. This is very happy news.”

The actor further said that “The entire team of Karthikeya 2 is overwhelmed with the response to the film.”

Karthikeya 2, for those unaware, is a film about Lord Krishna and glorifies Indian culture. The reason why the Karthikeya 2 movie performed well on box office is because of its authenticity and portrayal of Hindu culture without any propaganda.  This is what the Indian audience wants. The evolved audience is no more interested in propaganda-infested anti-Hindu and anti-Indian films that, in any way, demean Indian culture.

Moreover, films with protagonists who have, in past, spewed venom against the nation or against any particular religion are also being boycotted. Nikhil, however, had no involvement in such controversies. This worked well for the movie as the audience chose Karthikeya 2 over Taapsee’s Dobaara, Aamir’s Laal Singh Chaddha, and Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger.

The success of Karthikeya 2 is a lesson for Bollywood as it is high time they realize that speaking against any particular religion and disrespecting your own country will not be tolerated anymore. What it needs is to make some fresh content that is unique, authentic and entertaining.
