Dismantling the minimum convenience program, which is common for all in a nation-state, Islamists have always tried to impose their way of existence in India. Every social, economic and political policy of the secular state has been moulded according to the belief system of one particular group. Rather than learning to live a peaceful life, the instrument of their co-existence has remained same from the ancient barbaric invaders to modern intellectual militants. They have made violence in the name of Jihad and coercion a way of life in a modern civilized society.
Living on the same pattern of existence, a mass coordinated protest was launched on December 2019 against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. The act was made to expedite the process of granting citizenship to the persecuted minorities from Muslim-majority nations of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In order to oppose this benevolent act, Muslims launched a sit-in protest in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area.
In order to draw the international attention, just when the US President Donald Trump was on a visit to India, the protesters went violent on 24 February 2020. Mass Muslim mobilization, hate speech, provocation, stone pelting, confrontation, and Islamist religious bigotry engulfed the national capital.
About 53 people were killed including an Intelligence Bureau Officer Ankit Sharma and over 200 people sustained injuries due to this violent protest. After around two and a half years, it appears that the authorities have finally decided to deliver justice to the victims of this bloody riot.
LG approved the compensation of victims
Media reports state that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, has approved the appointment of 40 assessors to settle the claims of victims of the Delhi Riots 2020 for compensation.
The North-East Delhi Riots Claims Commission (NERDCC) formed to assess the compensation of Delhi Riots’ victims had only 25 assessors. Out of them only 14 were working, which was insufficient to complete the procedure on time.
The statement from the LG office said, “It may be noted that even after more than 2.5 years, of the total 2,775 claims submitted to date, the commission has been able to process only 200 i.e. 7% of the claims. Interestingly, of the earlier appointed 25 claim assessors, only 14 had been conducting surveys without any deadline resulting in delays. After assessment of damages, the assessors submit the reports to the claims commissioner for his recommendations to be sent to the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi.”
Earlier in April 2022, the Union Home Ministry had directed the Delhi Government to assess the damages to victims and submit the report of the claims to the commissioner for deciding the compensations. Working under the direction of the home ministry, LG VK Saxena has approved the appointments to expedite the process of assessment.
Justice is coming
The increase in number of assessors to the NERDCC is expected to quicken the compensation process for victims who are waiting for justice. In the riots, not only people were killed or injured but their property was damaged and looted too.
Although the psychological trauma of victims cannot be equalized in monetary terms, it will help them in easing their life ahead. Other than the monetary compensation, justice will only prevail when the perpetrators of the crime are brought under the might of law.
On Tuesday, Delhi Police opposed the bail plea of Islamist leader Umar Khalid has submitted to Delhi High Court that the CAA protest was not an organic or independent movement. The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India (PFI) were behind the whole plot of coordination and implementation of violent protests in Delhi. The locals did not support the protests, Delhi Police added.

Opposing the bail plea, Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad argued that Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and several others conspired to protest, which resulted in riots. Persons were sent to protest places by numerous organisations, and these people were the masterminds behind the violent protest.
The prosecution’s claim that Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam were the masterminds of the bloody riots, who coordinated with the Islamist political groups, will not only withhold their bail plea but will help in establishing their crime in the event.
They are already booked under stringent anti-terror law Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The commencement of a fast-track trial and prosecution of propagators and sufficient compensation will finally bring justice to the victims of the Deadly Delhi Riots 2020.
