Human civilization entered the modern era with the explosion of two nuclear bombs in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The US’s nuclear bombing of Japan killed about 2.14 Lakh people in one go in 1945. The wrath of the bombing doesn’t end here, it was seen that those who survived the bombing faced leukemia, cancer, or other diseases from the radiation and died slow death thereafter.
The bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had an explosive yield of 15 kilotons of dynamite and 20 kilotons of dynamite respectively. These used warheads are compared as low-yield explosives in comparison to modern nuclear weapons. The modern nuclear weapons of the US and Russia are thermonuclear weapons, which have an explosive yield of about 100 kilotons of dynamite. According to the NukeMap, one 100-kiloton nuclear weapon in any populated city is sufficient to kill about 6 Lakh people in one go. Reports suggest that the US has more than 5,428 nuclear weapons and Russia has about 6000. Considering the bomb’s devastating effect, a recent report predicts that a nuclear war between the US and Russia will bring back the ICE Age on earth.
Nuclear war will end life on Earth
A comprehensive study conducted under the leadership of Rutgers University’s climate scientists suggests that nuclear war will end life on Earth. The research supported by the European Union analyzed the social, economic, and environmental consequences of the potential nuclear war.
The report stated that global food insecurity and famine would be triggered due to climate disruption from nuclear war soot injection. The nuclear weapon detonation would engulf the atmosphere with explosive soot causing disruptions to the Earth’s climate. It will further limit terrestrial and aquatic food production on the planet. Crop, marine fishery and livestock production would be reduced to an unprecedented level causing food unavailability.
The climatic conditions disrupted due to the nuclear detonation would lead to mass food shortage. The livestock and aquatic food production would be unable to compensate for reduced crop output. Adaptation measures like reduction in food wastage would have limited impact ultimately causing famine in the world.
Further, the report estimated that the regional nuclear war between India and Pakistan would claim the lives of more than 2 billion people, and more than 5 billion could die from a war between the United States and Russia.

Will nuclear war bring the ICE Age?
The existence of life on earth is attributed to the balanced availability of temperature and pressure. After the big bang explosion in space, the constant process of degassing and temperature balancing of the earth provided food, air, water, and energy for life.
In the early stabilization process, the degassing of the earth, although, balanced the atmospheric condition. But life still was absent due to the unavailability of heat. The unavailability of greenhouse conditions reduced the temperature bringing the ice age on earth. Carbon dioxide provided a way to absorb the heat and made life possible on earth.
Similarly, if the soot of nuclear detonation would be spread in the atmosphere for a long, the heat balance of the earth will be negatively impacted. The deep black amorphous carbon produced after the war would engulf the sky and would hinder the absorption of the sun’s radiation ultimately leading to a reduction in temperature at an unprecedented level. The reduction in temperature would ultimately bring back the ice age era with widespread glaciations.
Consequently, a nuclear war between the US and Russia will not only affect food production but would also bring back the Ice age. The reduction in temperature will affect the food security of the world and will create total havoc on earth. Life on earth will cease to exist in any nuclear war.
