Career and Tragedy
Despite having a successful domestic career, Bhanuka Rajapaksa didn’t make his international debut until 2019, ten years after his first-class debut, when he was called up for the T20I series against Pakistan.
His international debut occurred during a tour of Pakistan, where he made a lasting impression on everyone with his explosive strokeplay. He scored 32 runs off just 22 balls to lead his team to a 64-run triumph.
He was included in Sri Lanka’s lineup for their series against India in July 2021. On July 18, 2021, against India, he played in his first One Day International (ODI). Rajapaksa was selected for the Sri Lankan team to compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021.
In a letter to the SLC dated January 5, 2022, Rajapaksa declared his international retirement at the age of 30. At the request of the sports minister, he revoked his resignation letter on January 13, 2022.
In June 2022, he was named for the ODI series against Australia.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa expressed his dissatisfaction over being omitted from the team due to fitness requirements after being excluded from the West Indies and England tours in 2021. He stated that on-field performances should take precedence over player fitness levels in a YouTube interview and attacked the Sri Lankan selectors and cricket officials for being inconsistent with their regulations.
Rajapaksa was attacked by Mickey Arthur, the head coach of Sri Lanka cricket, who referred to him as a “comfort zone cricketer” on the field and said that he had not passed the skin-fold tests necessary to meet the fitness standards needed to compete in international cricket tournaments.
