Early Career
Shalmali started singing at the age of 16, but her mother, the Indian classical singer and stage personality Uma Kholgade had been teaching her music since she was eight years old.
She later continued her musical studies with Shubhada Paradkar, and she was recently accepted to the Los Angeles College of Music for its April semester. However, she chose not to enroll because of her recording commitments.
She has performed as a supporting vocalist for Ali Zafar’s songs during her time as a professional singer in Mumbai.
Breakthrough
In 2012, Shalmali made her Bollywood playback singing debut as the lead vocalist on the song “Pareshaan” from the movie Ishaqzaade, which was composed by Amit Trivedi. The song topped charts across India and enjoyed both economic and critical success. For among other accolades, Pareshaan Kholgade received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer.
