A blessing automatically becomes a curse for a person if it is misused. China was strong because of its population. However, its population has become a curse and as a consequence, the nation is forced to give flats in exchange of watermelons. On the contrary, it is India that is turning its population as its strength. India has reportedly crossed the 140 billion mark in terms of population, and it is indeed a good number when it comes to beating China.
India will surpass China in terms of population
While the world was celebrating population day on July 11, the UN revealed that India would be the world’s most populated country next year, surpassing China.
“India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country during 2023,” said the World Population Prospects 2022, by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division.
The reports suggest that in 2022, India’s population will only be slightly lower (at 1.412 billion) than China’s (1.426 billion). By 2050, the country is likely to have a population of 1.668 billion which is way ahead of China’s 1.317 billion.
Amitabh Kundu, a member at the World Resources Centre, told media that “Our model was quite robust as far as population projections were concerned. We have taken very rigorous care. Projections made by the expert group are much more reliable than UN’s World Population Prospects. The UN’s projections are based more on macro considerations, whereas Indian demographic projections are far more robust.”
“It is not surprising since the rate of population growth in India is much higher than in China at the moment,” he said.
He further added, “We had thought then (when the committee prepared its report) that India will certainly overtake China this year or at the beginning of next year. It is a reality.”
India could claim a permanent seat in the UNSC
Soon after the news broke out, speculations are rife that India becoming the world’s most populous country will probably strengthen its claim to a permanent seat on the Security Council.
UN Population Division Director John Wilmoth, when asked about the significance of the change in global population rankings, said that “I wonder what will happen in terms of the discussion around roles at the UN and the roles of the Permanent Five members of the Security Council if India becomes the largest country (and) they may think that gives them a claim?”
“They’ve been claiming that they should be part of that group (of permanent members) anyway, but, you know, it may strengthen their claim,” he added.
China couldn’t bring the population its use
The world’s two most populous regions in 2022 were Eastern and South-eastern Asia, with 2.3 billion people, accounting for 29 per cent of the global population. Following which there is Central and Southern Asia, with 2.1 billion, representing 26 per cent of the total world population.
China and India are the largest populated countries, with more than 1.4 billion people each, in 2022. However, there is a dramatic difference between both the countries about how they use the population in their favour. The One-Child Policy was introduced by China in 1979 by the CCP, to curb the menace of a growing population. Anyone with more than one child, post-1980, was made to face the wrath of the tyrannical Chinese state, not to mention that the second child was snatched away from parents and dispatched to anonymity. ‘One-Child Policy’ has made China an old nation. It is empowering human trafficking and prostitution.
The ‘One-Child Policy’ was supposed to address China’s overpopulation problem but it has resulted in a future generation with a massive gender imbalance. The gender imbalance has created a generation of young Chinese men who face steep competition in getting married, given the limited number of women in their generation. China, thus, is forced to begin a human trafficking industry. China now traffics women from South and Southeast Asia, as Chinese men have begun to pay for brides.
Adding salt to the fire is China’s old age population. While India’s old age population stands at 6.5 per cent, China’s old age population is at 14.2 per cent. This is the reason China is losing its track and its condition, in every aspect, is declining.
It is indeed a good number for India
India’s population has always been the most powerful weapon against its rivals and competitors. India has always been a more powerful economy than West or China. The policymakers in the Modi Government–Principal Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal, Economic Advisory Committee chairman Bibek Debroy advised the government to bring foreign policy and economy together instead of operating them in silos. And the result of this is that the Modi government has been able to bring China on its knees by throwing the Chinese companies out sector by sector.
The huge population of the country, which was seen as a burden by short-sighted policymakers, has been turned into strength by the Modi Government. The imports from China have gone down dramatically, while exports out of India have risen in the first six months of this calendar year.
Since the year 2014, the central government has implemented many such projects and policies that are beneficial for the younger generation. The schemes like Skill India Mission, Make in India, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Digital India Mission and Startup India are contributing a lot to help the younger generation, leading to a better path, which will indeed help India to increase its economic power.
You see, India under Modi Government knows how to turn a crisis into an opportunity. And thus, the rising population of India is a good sign when it comes to beating China.
