From Nehru, to Gandhi, and now Vadra: The course of Congress party is all set to change

Gandhi family

Once, on a lighter note, the then Gujarat CM and BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi took pot-shots at Congress’ PM candidate Rahul Gandhi. He made a jibe saying that if statements of Rahul Gandhi are combined, it can easily finish off the comedy show of Kapil Sharma. Apparently, it looks like the Congress party is adamant to make a mockery out of itself.

After the humiliating loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi’s statements were all over the news. He kept on falsely sermonising that Congress leadership should be freed from the commands of the Gandhi family. Since then, it has become hypocritical rhetoric making a mockery of the party, Indian democratic setup and voters. The latest developments are a clear indication that Congress has ceased to be a political party. It has become a private family-led business enterprise with no respect for democratic values.

The evident is about to happen – A new entrant at the helm of Congress

The Damad Ji, Robert Vadra, husband of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, is soon going to get the command and legacy of the grand old party, Congress, on a silver platter. He used the media platforms to hint at his political entry. He chose the timing of his mother-in-law’s questioning by the ED to catapult his political career.

In the DLF case famed, keen agriculture enthusiast, Robert Vadra alleged the BJP of misusing the investigating agencies. He accused that whenever the saffron party, BJP, finds angst among the general public, it starts targeting the Gandhi family.

He said, “Tell me the name of one BJP leader these agencies have called for questioning. Every time the BJP feels that the nation is unhappy with their policies, they start troubling the Gandhi family.”

Interestingly, he stressed that there is an imminent need for change in the nation. For that, if the public wants him to be the catalyst for change, he will enter politics. He added, “There is a need for change in this nation. If people feel I can bring about the change needed in the country, I will enter politics”.

He linked ED’s summons to Sonia Gandhi with GST. He emphasised that she is being questioned by ED because people are unhappy with GST. He added, “Nowadays, businessmen get notice from the ED rather than the Income Tax department.”

Experience matters!

He explained the rationale behind skipping the visit to the ED office with his wife and Mother-in-law. He stressed that he stands with the family. He went on to say that he used his experience of visiting ED offices regularly in connection with alleged corruption scandals. He used that experience to advise his mother-in-law on how to deal with the investigating agency.

He said, “If everyone gets detained, there has to be someone on the outside to speak against injustice. I have advised her (Sonia Gandhi) on how to deal with the investigating agency since I have been to the ED 15 times and submitted 23,000 documents (in a money laundering case).”

Shifting the party Baton

The Congress party once had tall leaders who fought against the colonising British power. It included stalwarts like Sardar Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, Morarji Desai and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Unfortunately, after Independence, one family monopolised control over the grand old party. By hook or by crook, the family kept on strengthening their grip on the party. The unfortunate demise of tall freedom fighters like Ironman Sardar Patel gave an easy pass for the then PM Jawahar Lal Nehru to run the party at his whims and fancies.

Later, the Nehru scion Indira Gandhi could not digest the party command going out of the Gandhi family. She forcefully got control over the party and trampled the senior talented leadership. Since then, Congress has earned the moniker of being a Nehru-Gandhi party.

The recent developments show that this time the party baton will be passed with lesser resistance. All the leadership seems to have kneeled before the Vadras, and it won’t be a surprise if anyone from the Vadra family becomes the President of the shrinking Congress party. Reports also suggest that Raihan Vadra can also enter into politics and that too from the top rungs of the party.

For the last decade or two, Indians have been fed up with the claims that some new young and dynamic leader from the Gandhi family, Rahul or Priyanka will change the fortune of Congress. Off late, the Congress party’s hopes have pivoted on the Vadra family, be it the agriculturalist Robert Vadra or young and “experienced” politician Raihan Vadra.

So, get ready to expect the unexpected from the party. It is not at all done with dynastic politics and seems to have an unquenchable appetite for political humiliation.
