From a broken housewife after husband’s death to India’s richest woman: The story of Savitri Jindal

Savitri Jindal

Do you know what feminism is? Well, I am not talking about the new age feminism ‘manufactured’ by today’s elite class women for whom feminism is all about the ‘right to wear’ and the ‘right to victimisation’. I am talking about the feminism that was introduced to the world by women warriors, women who led the nation to achieve new heights, and women who are an example of what courage is.

Moving forward to 2022, although less, there exist women who are setting the right example and inspiring others to achieve the heights of success. One such woman is Savitri Jindal.

Savitri Jindal made it to Forbes list

Can you imagine, a woman who never went to college, but is the richest woman of the country? The woman who only knew how to take care of the household is now managing an empire net worth of $18 billion. Savitri Jindal is not the regular woman you come across. She took over her husband’s business only after he passed away in 2005. Yet, the chairperson of OP Jindal Group added another feather to her cap when she acquired the position of the richest woman in India, after adding $12 billion to her fortune in only two years. She is the only woman on Forbes India’s Richest list and is at the seventh position in 2021. She also ranks 91st on the Forbes Billionaires’ List.

You might be surprised to know that her wealth tripled more than three times in the last two years from around $4.8 billion in 2020, to $17.7 billion in 2022. While during 2019 to 2020, Jindal’s fortune witnessed a downfall by 50 per cent and her net worth dropped from $8.8 billion in 2018 to $5.9 billion in 2019 and $4.8 in 2020, Jindal made a shocking comeback with her leadership in the steel manufacturing giant.

The inspiring journey of Savitri Jindal

Savitri Jindal was more of a home-maker. She had once famously said that “the women in their family take care of the household and do not take part in the business side of things.”

She had said, “We remain in charge of the house while the men take care of everything outside.”

However, destiny had planned something else for Jindal. Her husband, Om Prakash Jindal passed away in a helicopter crash in 2005. He died when Savitri was 55-years-old. Although she could not manage to go to college but her education could not become an obstacle in her journey as a businesswoman. Under the leadership of Savitri Jindal, the OP Jindal Group witnessed its revenue grow by four times.

While many think of taking retirement at 55 and putting their feet up, the OP Jindal Group Chairperson, who was also a mother and a wife, took the onus upon herself to take the business to further levels.

The mother of nine children, Savitri Jindal has four sons with OP Jindal — Prithviraj, Sajjan, Ratan and Naveen Jindal. The group’s share were divided among the four sons after OP Jindal’s death.
