Yashwant Sinha becomes job seeker at 84 years

Maharashtra Himanta

The ‘roll-back Finance Minister’ has caught the eyeballs once again, as he has turned into a job seeker and interestingly he has succeeded in persuading his masters to bet on him. At the time of the announcement of Yashwant Sinha’s name for presidential candidacy, let’s have a look at his career filled with opportunism.

Yashwant Sinha: Opposition’s Presidential candidate

Yashwant Sinha, who holds many formers to his name, has been named as the joint opposition candidate for the upcoming Presidential polls. Reports suggest that consensus was formed on Sinha name in the Opposition camp during the Opposition parties meeting at the Parliament convened by NCP chief Sharad Pawar. The Opposition parties unanimously agreed on Mr. Sinha’s name.

“In the forthcoming Presidential elections, we have decided to elect a common candidate and stop the Modi government from doing further damage. At a subsequent meeting held today we have chosen Yashwant Sinha as a common candidate. We appeal to all political parties to vote for Yashwant Sinha,” said Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s communication chief, reading from a joint statement by the opposition.

Though Sinha has been chosen as the joint Presidential candidate for the upcoming polls, the Opposition has already submitted before the BJP without even contesting. The joint statement appealed to the BJP and its allies to support the candidature of Sinha so as the nation can have a “worthy Rashtrapati elected unopposed.”

Yashwant Sinha hinted at the same through his cryptic tweet

On Tuesday morning, Sinha hinted at the same line through his cryptic tweet. His single cryptic tweet ended all the speculations about Opposition’s candidate for the upcoming presidential polls.

In his tweet, he thanked the supremo of his current party, Mamata Banerjee for the “honour and prestige” bestowed upon him in the party. He said that the time when he should step aside for a larger national cause, and work for a greater opposition unity. His tweet further read, “I am sure she approves the step.”

Sinha is a man who owns a way too long political career, a career filled with opportunism and refuses to retire. And now he has turned into a job seeker at the age of 84 years.

Yashwant Sinha: Neither ‘tired’ nor ‘retired’

The former bureaucrat turned politician, has a political career that is worth a political science lesson for the upcoming politicians in the nation. Born and brought up in Bihar’s Patna, Sinha has always been over ambitious and this is the reason why he has reduced himself to a laughing stock.

Sinha has a problem, the problem of over-estimating himself, and he has done this right from beginning. It was in December 1989, that Sinha refused the offer to be a part of the VP Singh cabinet as he was miffed for being offered a MoS portfolio. Then a part of the Janata Dal, Sinha could not accept the MoS berth, and demanded a cabinet one despite being a first-time Member of Parliament.

In order to give it back to V P Singh, Sinha shifted sides and allied with Chandra Shekhar, the man who split the Janata Dal to form the Samajwadi Janata Party and later succeeded V P Singh as the PM of India. Sinha then fulfilled his desire of being in the cabinet by becoming the Union Finance Minister.

He further shifted his allegiance and contested the 1995 assembly polls from Hatia seat on a BJP ticket in undivided Bihar. He later won the 1999 Lok Sabha polls from Hazaribagh. His association with L K Advani helped him reverse his fortunes. In the Atal Vihari cabinet, he first served as union finance minister in 1999 and later as external affairs minister in 2002.

His final retirement was drafted by PM Narendra Modi. The Bhartiya Janata Party rebuffed Sinha in 2014 as the party chose his son Jayant Sinha for the LS ticket over Senior Sinha. He announced his retirement from active politics in 2018 and tried to portray himself as a particular neutral.

However, soon he exposed himself as he went under Didi’s fold in order to gain his long-craved attention. He joined the Trinamool Congress just before the West Bengal Assembly polls in 2021 and became its vice-president.

However, Opportunist Sinha has exposed himself one again by quitting TMC for “larger opposition unity”. Arun Jaitely was right about Sinha when he called Sinha a job applicant at 80. Sinha has again turned a job seeker and is now eyeing the president seat at the age of 84.
