While you have all heard of how PM Modi was framed in the Gujarat riots 2002 case, only a few of you would have tried to know or have searched about who is responsible for the pain that PM Modi had to bear for 20 years. No worries, if you haven’t yet as we’ll talk about one of the culprits involved in the process. She is Teesta Seetalvad.
Teesta Seetalvad detained
A day after the Supreme Court upheld the clean chit given by the SIT team to Prime Minister Modi, Ahmedabad Police on Saturday arrested former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer R.B. Sreekumar, and detained Mumbai-based activist Teesta Setalvad. Gujarat Police has also filed a first information report (FIR) against RB Sreekumar, Teesta along with jailed dismissed IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt. All of them have been accused of various charges, including forgery and criminal conspiracy.
Reportedly, Ms. Setalvad under the Section 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), Section 471 (using as genuine a forged document), Section 194 (providing or fabricating false evidence with intent to procure conviction of capital offence), Section 211 (false charge of offence made with intent to injure), Section 218 (public servant framing incorrect record or writing with intent to save person from punishment or property from forfeiture), and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

The 10-page FIR cites observations from the Supreme Court verdict delivered on June 24 which read, “At the end of the day, it appears to us that a coalesced effort of the disgruntled officials of the State of Gujarat along with others was to create sensation by making revelations which were false to their own knowledge. The falsity of their claims had been fully exposed by the SIT after a thorough investigation.”
The Best Bakery case
Teesta Setalvadhas been the lynchpin of everything wrong with the perception of PM Modi. She had used PM Modi and Gujarat riots for her pecuniary gains. The first and most prominent case related to the 2002 riots is that of the Best Bakery case. Zaheera Sheikh was one of the key witnesses in this case.
On March 1, 2002, a small outlet owned by one Sheikh family in Vadodara was attacked during the violence. A special court in Mumbai charged nine out of the seventeen accused with life imprisonment. However, when the witness from the family of Best Bakery owners, Zaheera Sheikh, appeared before different courts, she said that she was influenced by social activist Teesta Setalvad into giving false testimony against the accused.
In her affidavit filed in High Court, Zaheerasaid that Teesta was constantly threatening her with life if she did not utter what was being fed to her. Zaheera said and we quote, “If we don’t lie as instructed by Teesta, then these people will get me and my family members killed.”
Teesta cooked story of killings
Wait what, there’s more to Teesta. R K Raghavan, a former CBI director who headed the SIT formed to probe PM Modi’s role in the 2002 riots accused her of cooking macabre tales of killings. Raghavan during his investigation found that Teesta Setalvad was a connecting link in almost all of them.
Raghavan and his team investigated 22 witnesses with identical affidavits. The SIT found that these witnesses had never actually witnessed the incident with their own eyes. As it later turned out, they were served with a similar script to parrot in Court.
One of the cases that was fabricated was that of the rape and murder of a woman named KausharBano. It was alleged that Kausar was gang-raped and her 9-month-old fetus was removed from her body by using sharp weapons. Since it was also the fabricated one, Raghavan termed all the cases as “macabre tales of killings”
Teesta made a career out of riots
Apparently, so much efforts only to stop the political journey of our current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, there is also a financial angle involved in the process.
Teesta made a career out of the 2002 riots. The cases related to the riots served as a late life insurance scheme for Teesta. In her speeches, she also used to tell gullible westerners as well as rich Indians that she is working towards the rehabilitation of Muslims affected by the 2002 riots. For 11 long years, she has probably collected a huge amount of money until poor Muslims got fed up with it.
More crimes in the cue
In 2013, members of Gulbarg society came out in public stating that Teesta had not spent a single penny for rehabilitating them. That too when she was collecting money for the reconstruction of houses for the members of displaced members of society. Additionally, to add glamour to her ‘charity collection drama’, she was also assuring people to convert the society into a museum for them to visit and witness. Even Muslims were frustrated so they decided to outright ban Teesta and her organisation “Citizens for Justice and Peace” from entering the place where victims of the riot used to reside.

In 2015, Gujarat Police had said that Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand had spent money collected for constructing a memorial for riot victims and their aid on personal expenses. The police said that the two had “misappropriated the funds of charity and converted to their own use – funds meant for the rehabilitation and welfare of the unfortunate victims of riots in Gujarat in February-March 2002”.
Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand are accused of embezzling funds, pushing false narratives in NCERT books and violations of FCRA.
Given the above facts, it can be asserted that Teesta is paying for what she has done throughout his life.
