Democracy has an intrinsic right to protest but that should not completely undermine the power of Parliament, the democratically elected government and reputed institutions like the Armed Forces. Laws are not a piece of paper but the necessary tool to uphold the rights of the citizens which can’t be ensured in banana Republic where the street vetoes any laws.
A strict No
The announcement of a new recruitment scheme Agnipath by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh faced violent protests at the hands of so-called aspirants of Armed Forces recruitment. Skipping all legal avenues available some misguided youth resorted to arson and vandalism. But they forgot the basic tenet of the Armed Forces, that is, Discipline.

All the three services officials held a tri-service press conference regarding the timeline of the recruitment under the Agnipath scheme. The armed forces categorically made it clear that the Agnipath scheme will go ahead as planned.

The three services officials also made it crystal clear that there is no scope for arson and vandalism in the armed forces. Additionally, the forces have given a clear direction that no individual involved in violent protests and arson will be allowed in the disciplined and decorated service of the Armed Forces. As, all the aspirants of Agnipath will have to give an undertaking that they were not indulged in any of these violent protests and arson. This will be followed by a Police verification.
Lieutenant-General Anil Puri, Additional Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs, said, “There is no space for indiscipline in the armed forces. No space for arson and vandalism. Every individual who aspires to join Agnipath has to give an undertaking and pledge that they have not taken part in any protest or arson. There will be police verification after that. No one can come into the armed forces without police verification,”

Before this the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the three Service chiefs for the second consecutive day.
A long due Reform
Lt General Puri highlighted the efforts of the tri-service to drastically improve the average age of the Armed Forces. He said that such efforts first came about three decades ago. The Kargil review committee too had reiterated the need for a reduction in age. Stressing that recruitment was not held for the past two years due to the Pandemic, he termed this opportunity as the one given by “God and nature”.
He apprised that with the Agnipath Scheme the average age of the armed forces will come down from 32 years to a desirable average of 26 years. He pointed out the necessity of this reduction as future wars will be technology driven and hence requires a younger profile.

He said,” whether God heard or nature heard, we got this golden opportunity. The forces had been waiting since 1984 to reduce the age profile.” He further added that serious deliberations had been going on for the past two years between the then Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat and tri-services chiefs.

He rejected the claim that several minor amendments and quota in several organisations like CAPF, Assam Rifles and state police have been made because of the abhorrent violence. He made it clear that all the successive announcements were already planned with a proper timeline and the same has been followed since the major announcement of the Recruitment scheme Agnipath.
Violent protests, Rhetoric of rollback
After the withdrawal of the three farm laws and the soft stance of the government on CAA, the left liberal cabal has made a mockery out of the democratic setup of India. Just for the sake of opposition they have resorted to creating hurdles and spreading rumours about all the laws, schemes or policies that the present administration undertakes. But their rumours fear mongering, anarchic ways, violent protests and atrocious demands for abeyance of the Agnipath Scheme have been badly thrashed by the personnel of the three Services.
So, after these categorical statements by the tri-services, the left liberal cabals, opposition and coaching mafias should shun their rumours and act of provoking young minds. The services have made it clear that the scheme is the only reformist major to reduce average age and would not suffer the same ill-fate of the three farm laws. The recruitment will go as planned and will not be street vetoed.
